Lain said his game is still not at the level it was his freshman year. "I have a long ways to go," he said. "But it's coming back to me more and more. I've just got to keep practicing harder." Lain is the kind of player that leads by example and not by words, Eccles said. "He's not a loud guy on the team," he said. "But there are times he speaks his mind." Eccles said the team is going to lean on Lain this season. "Everyone relies on the goalie," he said. "If the goalie stays focused and doing everything he can every time, that can inspire the rest of the team. Last year everyone relied on [Aaron] Burrell and Adam and Chris. But Burrell and Webber graduated so everyone is relying on him." The team did just that last Saturday, riding Lain to a 3-0 shutout victory over BYU. "My wife made him a cake," Eccles said. "She makes him cake when he has a shutout." Eccles said this will not be his only shutout of the season. "I bet he has the potential of having five shutouts," he said. "Our defense is stronger than last year and our offense is deeper." Lain had only one shutout last season which came against Long Beach State. Eccles said Lain is not only an amazing person on the ice, but in the classroom as well. "He enjoys school," he said. "He had like a 3.9 one of the semesters last year." Regardless of how many shutouts he has, or how many national championships the team wins, this vagabond said USU is his last stop in the hockey world. "This will be the end of my hockey career," he said. "I've got some other plans. Some friends and I want to build a house in Mexico and stuff like that." -bhhinton@cc.usu.edu to play. No one out here gets paid to do any of this — it's about wanting to play and having fun. And winning will come." Pitts shared the same outlook for the club, although he acknowledged the club has a lot of new faces. "This year's team is a really new team, but a lot better than last year," he said. "Last year we had like 10 or 11 regular guys and this year we'll probably have like 15 to 16." Pitts said having a coach this year will also contribute to the team's success. Ikerd, who also teaches ultimate frisbee classes in the physical education department at USU, has previous coaching experience in the Dallas, Texas, city leagues. In addition to Ikerd, the inexperienced team will look to Pitts and team president Isaac Westfield for leadership. Westfield had been serving as the team coach before Ikerd took over. "The biggest thing this year is just discipline and a lot of patience," Pitts said. Both Pitts and Ikerd emphasized that the team is still accepting players for anyone who is interested. They said they would like to see more women participating and hopes of being able to field an entire women's squad. "If you didn't have subs and you were to play a tournament all day Saturday, that's probably the equivalent of running a marathon," Ikerd said. This weekend's tournament has the possibility of co-ed competition, Pitts said, the team will play co-ed if the1 other team they are playing ' brings women, but if there are1 not any other mixed teams, it will be an all-male tournament. The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday on the fields behind the HPER building. The team will also be participating in the Lucky Sevens tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. on Nov. 12-13. ~cmoffit@cc.usu.edu • FOOTBALL From page 8 Meet the Challenge USU (1-1) @ IDAHO (0-4) Brent Guy, 1st year Nick Holt, 2nd year \f< ^"j ^JL [-, Saturday, Oct. 1, Kibbie Dome, 3 p.m. UTAH STATE PLAYERS TO WATCH IDAHO PLAYERS TO WATCH WR Tony Pennyman is the Aggies' KB Jayson Bird will not play due to an leading receiver with 97 yards on injured collar-bone. USU beat UNLV 31-24. dog anyways and those penalties aren't going to help at all." The Vandals will be a tough opponent at home since they have started off their season 0-4. Their closest loss was at UNLV by a late field goal, 34-31. Last weekend, the Vandals kicked off their conference season with a 24-0 loss to Hawaii at home. "They'll be hungry," Bush said, "and trying to get a win somewhere. They're probably thinking on their schedule, 'OK, Utah State — that's a win.' We're going to try to not let that happen." The Vandals have averaged 55 yards rushing and 218 yards passing this season. "They want to run the football," Guy said. "The basic philosophy is they want to be able to run it and haven't been able to and were very good throwing the football against UNLV." Sophomore running back Roily Lumbala will probably get the start as Antwaun Sherman has a high ankle sprain and may not play at all. Lumbala was called "a pretty heavy running back" by Bush. To deal with his size, Bush said the defensive backs will have to come up and make the tackle instead of waiting for him. The Aggies will be looking to improve on : their running game, which didn't perform as well against UNLV as it had against Utah. | The Aggies rushed for 163 ] yards against the Utes but could only find ! 61 yards on the ground against the Rebels. ] Ryan Bohm is USU's leading rusher i with 77 yards on the ground this season. Leon Jackson III is second with 75 yards. One positive for the Aggies is their : turnover margin. ; "We're leading the WAC right now in i turnover margin," Guy said, "which is the. j proudest stat we have right now as a team. Teams that are in the plus in turnover margin have a great chance of being winning teams." -krn@cc.usu.edd |
