Show FRIDAY,DEC.5,2004 UTAH>#|T A T E S M A N 13 Fear of failure can cripple mothers , Fans of "Desperate "Housewives" may have been .most interested in which wife •would be killed off Sunday !night, but if they were paying attention, they also discovered a pearl of wisdom. Amid the adultery, deceit and violence of the hit show's eighth episode, there was great insight into the nature of modern motherhood. Lynette, the careerwoman-turned-stay-at-homemom, flees her home and ' four children after a midday dream about suicide. When , two concerned friends track her down, she confesses to feeling like a failure as a mother. Both women empathize, recalling their own struggles with raising children. Even the "perfect" Stepford-like Bree admits that she used to cry during her kids' naptimes. "Why didn't you ever tell me this?" Lynette pleads. The Stepford answer? "Nobody likes to admit they can't handle the pressure." That line struck a nerve with many mothers, both stay-at-home moms and those with careers. It's not only lack of time, but also the pressure of unrealistic expectations _ both social and self-imposed _ that drives many mothers to despair of their abilities. There is no easy way to deal with the anxiety, but women can v^y1' DEWEY GOLD RUSH striken rich this summer! Ford vetoed the Freedom of Information amendments on Oct. 17, 1974, calling them "unconstitutional and unworkable." On Nov. 20, the House overrode the veto by a 371 -to31 margin; the Senate vote Nov. 21 was 65 to 27 to override. Notes from the first White House senior staff meeting presided over by Rumsfeld and Cheney (Sept. 30, 1974) show rising anger over leaks; and Ford himself opened the National Security Council meeting on Oct. 7, 1974, by complaining about leaks for a full two pages of the transcript, asking for "recommendations on how to tighten up this system," and telling his advisers that "I could nave '••' Hareyou sold dish, alarms, pest control, or other products? As my part of the healing process, I will stop reminding people that 'Taliban" has the same number of syllables and rhyming structure as "Vietnam" and can thus be used in all the same war protest songs; especially that R-rated one from the Woodstock soundtrack. FOIA requests regularly make headlines exposing corruption and conflicts of interest, and the leading users are veterans and their families seeking information on their benefits and service records. The veto crowd was wrong in 1974, but the Cheney task force lawsuit reminds us that the battle for open government is still raging. Thomas S. Blanton can be contacted at tblanton@gwu.edu.
