The culprit? The Utes' road struggles have finally caught up to them. In spite of scoring a 197.3 at home last week, the Utes dropped a spot in the rankings because of the implementation of the Regional Qualifying Score (RQS). The score is derived from the six highest scores of the season, three of which must be on the road, dropping the highest score and averaging the remaining five. The killers in all of that are the road results, where Utah is sporting two scores in the 195 range, including a 195.3 against UCLA. Road woes have been well documented for the Utes this season, as they have struggled to compete at the same high level they do at home. This weekend, Utah travels 45 miles south to visit BYU, and co-head coach Megan Marsden hopes the fans that follow them can help the gymnasts earn a good road score. "Many times we have as many or more [fans] than they do," Marsden said. "And one of the advantages of hav- BULLINGER Continued from page 6 reaping any of the benefits they rightfully own. Rather, the NCAA wants athletic departments — not schools, mind you — to keep the money to pay coaches, or the NCAA just hordes the money for itself to provide its executives with six-figure salaries. Mark Emmert, the NCAA president, has a salary of about $1.6 million per year. In Bauman's case, he was punished because he committed an incredible sin. Bauman put the fruits of his labor up for sale. This labor didn't occur on the wrestling mat, but that doesn't matter. Per the NCAA's domineering rules, an athlete cannot use his or her name to promote any commercial sales. The rule is ridiculous, but the NCAA's reaction is ing a short road trip on a bus is that it's considered a road score, but you haven't really done the full-on travel, and so that could be helpful for us." Del Priore named PacI2 Specialist of the Week The Utes have been all over the Pac-12 weekly awards this season. Lia Del Priore's career-highs on floor and vault against Stanford earned her the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week award, making it the fourth straight week a Ute has taken home the honor. Tory Wilson snagged it twice in that span, and Georgia Dabritz won it on Feb. 12. Del Priore scored a 9.9 on vault in the first rotation, then followed that up on floor by posting Utah's second To.° this season on the floor. The last time two Utes scored a io.o in the same season was in 2005, when Ashley Postell and Annabeth Eberle earned los on beam and floor, respectively. That was also the last time any Ute had achieved it on floor. Utah also has two other weekly awards to its credit and could have had a third. On Jan. 22, Dabritz earned the Gymnast of the Week after posting a winning 39.525 in the all-around and winning three events in a quad meet. That same week, Wiljust as foolish. Rather than sending a representative to Minnesota to tell Bauman of his error, they simply pulled his eligibility. It's easy to act like a dictator if your rules prevent any challenge to authority, and that's exactly the system the NCAA operates. The argument around paying players isn't a new one, but the NCAA's handling of Bauman's case took its irrational behavior to a new extreme. Bauman wasn't going to earn any money for on-field work. And did the NCAA really think his music was going to make him a pot of cash? Nobody outside a small circle of Minnesota wrestling fans and family members would purchase the video. But there are few organizations out there as moneyhungry as the NCAA, so how dare an athlete make othertwucker L " 1 tte rtweet weetlemaniactaifii9j twittertweetmoinertwwcker we a little harder tweet a little halide . rspeak twitter needhmore tweets? ertwuc-I er ot son took her first Specialist of the Week award for a 9.95 on vault. twitter spaealtkwteweinteedr m twd1 deed tte rtweet mcieotts : idiot i twidiot 1 0 twi iot twi iot maltweeted heard on the tweettalgi need more tweetsAeetwalkermaltweeted Utes look for consistency on beam, bars twibtle inliacf '_ • twe . 111F need oree t -ets? + • Those perfect ios can only hlOthertWiriCkerL WI do so much for the Utes as tweatleman liwno the team continues to strugtwee • • ri e Min V gle in a pair of events — r g;r beam and bars. The NCAA already takes an unethical approach by not paying its critical employees, but now its reach extends beyond the field of play. College athletes aren't its beneficiaries or its employees. Rather, they are being treated as servants. Everything the NCAA outlaws athletes to do, it does. Athletes can't profit from their fame, but the NCAA can. Athletes can't make any money off the sales of their jerseys or autographs, but the NCAA can. The NCAA is a monopoly, but the government won't budge on breaking it up. Until a grassroots movement gets the job done, students like Bauman will continue to suffer. j.bullinger@ chronicle.utah.edu Twitter: jakebullinger .40 it e t k iiiiti%%' li I 1Kt1 i :PIN II% I % Ili INA 1:1441t Y40 II ilk% tt I li ti ll It ... 1 11 it % li 11144 Iliaittit.air I liv% l h illi li %IA li 111 t i kilkiiiilligt 4104 iditeir h iiIIIIIIAIN:Iti iiii a 14,111: 1 kr i.klih,411/4 IIF. linois IR likiiirtm,. 14 Il0 11 . 111,10 1111 I ll 01, 4 141 % iii- e 01 4111 % lull 1 Nt li iii -- lit 114..„ lig 14 ii 11 On% l 4 University MEDIA SALES GROUP ASEST OA' UZE 9321 15 63 85 4912 7 BNNSPAOT OEEAASRS FVIO STP FAK NTA TT ASL RDIIYUYW NRENPSI GAETATIY MA AND EISSDBS AOTRA ISSASETA AUTLAAIRF ARR EAT EBSYATM facebook.com/PCSTcomics with the University Media Sales Group On Campus 20 Hours per Week Up to 22% Commissions To Apply Contact: Paul Kennard (801) 581-7751 p.kennard@utah.edu Doug Bretton 2013 '" If THE EMPIRE HAP PASSED STRICTBLASTER coNTRoL.
