Michael Smith STAFF WRITER The first half of Utah's game against Arizona State started like every contest in its sixgame losing streak. The Utes once again struggled to find a rhythm and were facing a deficit, but they stopped their usual trend. Utah fought back, took the lead and never gave up in its 66-46 win over the Sun Devils. By snapping their sixgame skid, the Utes snagged their first win since Dec. 20. After falling behind early to ASU, the Utes found momentum and stormed to the lead at halftime. They came out with the same intensity and toyed with the players from Tempe, Ariz., in the second half, coasting to a 20-point victory and getting their first conference win of the season. "We are very proud of our team," said head coach Anthony Levrets. "The hardest part about losing and what we just went through as a team is seeing the kids you care about suffer. It's very rewarding as a staff to see them get some success." Down 22-17 with fewer than seven minutes to play in the first half, a couple of nicely set-up layups by freshman guard Paige Crozon and veteran Taryn Wicijowski sparked the Utes to a 12-2 run to end the half. "By the end of the first half, we just kind of settled in," Wicijowski said. "We saw them around the perimeter and it allowed us to get a lot of easy shots inside." The Utes (ro-7, 1-5 Pac-r2) took advantage of the inside game and had 32 points in the paint — eight more than Arizona State. The Utes had three scorers in double figures. Wicijowski led the team in points in the first frame with ro, followed by Michelle Plouffe's eight. Wicijowski and Plouffe finished the game with i6 and i8 points, respectively, and Iwalani Rodrigues finished with i6. In the second half, Arizona State only shot 29 percent and finished with 33 percent shooting for the game. The Utes only allowed one Sun Devil, center Joy Burke, to score in double figures. "We knew they wanted to get into the paint," Plouffe said. "Our game plan was to keep them out of it, and I e rtwee othertwucker t w i ttreed more t ets think our guards did a really good job of staying in their gaps and not letting them get to the paint." On the offensive side of the ball, Utah was on fire. It shot 63 percent from the field in the second half and finished at 55 percent for the game. It was Utah's best shooting performance since shooting 63 percent in a win over Utah State. Utah's first win in conference play removed it from the Pac-r2 cellar, separating itself from the 2-16 Oregon Ducks. "'Finally' is the word that comes to mind," Wicijowski said. "It feels great." The excitement wasn't limited to those on the court. Levrets and his staff were visibly relieved by the end of the team's conference losing streak that followed a promising start to the season. "We had a determination that we weren't going to lose this game," Levrets said. "I'm happy for myself, and I'm happy for our staff, but mostly, we're happy for our team. I cannot emphasize enough how much we like this group." m.smith@chronicle.utah.edu Twitter: @smithmichael8 tw I d I ot tw, twidiot • ae latkwt we e i ttteedr altweeted ears on ed more tweets? jot twi twi lot the twalker tweetZtet n .ct • e t eel k. tw oi te , t NI : we ea w 'ed ore t -ets? + IA othertwyckerLVVI Nertleman a • t et e • •n * I r • n _ ji , ; y. • --t r • twee -d ee • .• ieak twitter twidiot • altweeted uklo • er , :. t r r it ets tot wi tot twi lot ..3S ot .1 . . k i tte speak twitter alittle Kars erspe ak tw ed more tweets? athertw cker tw Neet e itte rtwee rd >ea k twitter h ialtweeted actt wwl$ it h illiei eet Kiliecarilirr Nittertw etakilit h veet a litt spe 'rtwittert athertwuc eidiot reed mor ed more twee eak twitter altweeted altweeted witter widiott ieotts jot idiot n the tweets i tot lot ad more tw ets?tweetwaIker. weeted titer ears Nee lemaniacm veet ed mo optmothertwu . h-at weet ras pliettalek h der *Wtre fi tter - wee twe t h : \nicker etiem niaktWidiOt wi.iotwidio, n .0 tewreReTt : -fe. tow raptkwteweittetedrthw mothertwucker tertwee .tt speak twitter d on the tweet w w i dti oh t• aae ttww k tee weei t te ddr ttn reed more tweets dtw I di ERIN BURNS/The Daily Utah Chronicle Iwalani Rodrigues was one of three Utes who scored in double figures in a win over Arizona State.
