The inexperienced Utes will need to continue their team chemistry as they head into conference play. Utes bond to strengthen play Matthew Ellis STAFF WRITER There is a ringing theme across the sports world that experience is needed in order to succeed. Rookies don't often excel, and it typically takes young teams several years before they can compete at a high level, regardless of the talent on the team. But the Utes (3-I-I), who don't have a single senior on their active roster, haven't lost in their past four games after losing their season opener. Utah has found a different method for building a competitive team. After the season-opening defeat to Utah State at Rio Tinto Stadium, junior goalkeeper Cheyanne Mulcock said the team's theme for this year is "ohana," a Hawaiian term that means "family." "The players on the team made a commitment to each other in the summer," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "It started back in June and they have stuck it out." With the key injuries the team has already had to work through, having a close bond with one another has proven to be more vital than ever. In the third game of the season against rival BYU, Mulcock went down after a collision while trying to secure the ball. Freshman Lindsey Luke was sent in to replace her. "I didn't think I was going to go in," Luke said. "When I did go in, I thought, `I have to do this for Chey and for all the girls who medically can't play anymore." But in spite of tired legs, Utah (3-I-I) protected a onegoal lead through the second half and managed to escape Ogden with a i-o victory over the Wildcats (o-4-o) on Saturday. "We traveled Thursday and we played and we knew this would, as the game wore on, get tougher and tougher," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "And it did. We hung in there — that's the most important thing." The lone goal came in the 25th minute of play from junior midfielder Allie Wis- ner. After the Wildcats failed to clear a corner kick by midfielder Leslie Muirhead, Wisner got a hold of the ball and fired toward the net. With the field wet from a storm that rocked the area the night before, a cluster of players failed to get a good enough foothold to deflect the shot, and the ball skipped past Weber State goalkeeper Ryann Waldman. "I kind of laughed afterward, but a goal's a goal," Wisner said. "I'm just happy I finally got that one." The score was the first of Wisner's career. Utah got another aggressive game from freshman forward Baylee Nielsen, who caused WSU's coach to yell "double her" every time she got the ball.
