No, I'm not nervous that either team will beat the Utes this football season. On the contrary, the fact that they'll both probably lose to Utah on the gridiron is what scares me. Far too much has been written for more than a year now about how being in the Pac-12 will be such a great boon to the U. Although it's undoubtedly true that tons of money will pour into the Athletics Department, no one can guarantee that such cash will lead to better recruiting and, ultimately, more victories. Let's start with Washington State. Through 41 years as a member of the Pac-ro/12, the Cougars have produced just 13 winning seasons in football. The men's basketball team made the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2008, The Daily Utah Chronicle is an independent student newspaper published daily Monday through Friday during Fall and Spring Semesters (excluding test weeks and holidays). The Beavers and Cougars wouldn't be so consistently bad if they had the means to recruit the best of the best. Stanford University had the highest athletic budget in the conference at $81.1 million annually. Utah probably won't ever have that high of budget, nor do I think it is likely that its budget will consistently be as low as $40 million. But the idea that Utah could wind up being another WSU or OSU, after all the hoopla that has surrounded the program for the last year, is frightening. As far as Oregon State is concerned, the Beavers last made the men's NCAA Tournament in 1990 and are in the midst of a pretty bad funk on the football field. All of the money and supposed exposure that each of these schools has as a member of one of the premiere conferences in college athletics hasn't seemed to do a whole lot of good in the win-loss column. In truth, I'm not entirely sold on the idea that a lot more money is getting pumped into these programs. As part of the aim to 17 10 argument 36 9 16 38 46 Asst. The department is seeking to raise sroo million from private sources in the corning years. On the campaign's website, it lists the 2010-2011 athletic budget for each Pac-12 school. The numbers show that Utah had the lowest budget of the 12 schools at $36.8 million, though that was before the Utes joined the conference. What is striking to me is that not only were OSU and WSU loth and nth respectively, but their budgets were just more than that of Utah's. The Beavers had a budget of $49.9 million and the Cougars' budget was just $40.6 million. In my eyes, this shows that being in the Pac-12 might not end up being all it's cracked up to be, even when it comes to financial gain. But it's not just a financial issue.
