Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 Monday, March 5, 2012 Utes fall to Cal after penalty MADELINE SMITH/The Daily Utah Chronicle Behind Michelle Plouffe's 21 points and 10 rebounds, Utah defeated Oregon on Saturday at the Huntsman Center and sealed the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament that takes place this week in Los Angeles. 7TH SEED continued from Page 6 sa II to 41.,„ rit ZL4 CHRISTOPHER REEVES/The Daily Utah Chronicle Tonata Lauti and the Utah rugby team battled the University of California Golden Bears on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium. As the play clock expired, Utah was in the lead 20-22 but a penalty was called and the Golden Bears were awarded a field goal, which took the Bears ahead with a victory of 23-22. STEAMROLLED continued from Page 6 The horrible loss overshadowed everything else, including Utah center Jason Washburn's career-high 26 points. Washburn led all scorers and made up more than half of the Utes' total points. Chris Hines and Dijon Farr added five points each for Utah, but beyond that, the points were few and far between. "We have a lot of deficiencies with what we are trying to do. We just didn't get locked in," Krystkowiak said. "We had a couple of mental breakdowns. We have been talking about how we were going to run our press-breaker for two days, and it took us four trips down the floor before we even woke up on that. So I knew our guys weren't mentally ready to go." On Senior Night, the Ducks put on a clinic as they finished with five players in double figures. Devoe Joseph led the team with 21 points, and Carlos Emory came off the bench to add 19 points for Oregon. The Ducks shot nearly 57 percent from the field, including 15 3-pointers. A week ago, the Utes were feeling on top of the world after an upset win against Stanford that ended an eightgame losing streak. Now with the regular season ending in a historic 46-point loss, Utah is at the bottom of the barrel. The news does not get any better as the Utes face Colorado on Wednesday night in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament. The Runnin' Utes lost to the Buffaloes by 4o points back on New Year's Eve, but Krystkowiak said the tournament gives his team a chance to forget about Saturday's loss and gives them a shot at redemption. "I think Oregon is playing as well as anyone in the league," Krystkowiak said. "Now we have to put the regular season behind us and go in and try to get a win in the Pac-12 tournament and see what happens." "We passed up too many shots when we played them [in Oregon]," Levrets said. "I wanted our kids to feel comfortable. We didn't shoot a great percentage, but nine made 3s [and that] is pretty good. I felt the flow and the tempo of the game was perfect for us." Of Utah's nine 3-pointers, Rodrigues made four. She finished with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals. Thanks in large part to Rodrigues' hot shooting, the Utes looked like a different team than the one that lost 72-67 in Eugene, Ore., on Feb. 2. "When we played them at their place, we were terrible," Rodrigues said. "We practiced getting back on defense and rebounding. We knew the offense would come." Not to be outdone, Plouffe scored 21 points, grabbed io rebounds and blocked four shots. Wicijowski also posted a double-double by recording 13 points and II rebounds. The most memorable image of Senior Day came after the outcome of the game was already decided. With Utah leading by 17 points and only 29 seconds remaining, Levrets called a timeout to put in Badon, Utah's only senior. She only stayed in for three seconds because of her injury, but Badon did technically get to play in her final career game at the Huntsman Center. Levrets said Badon will be re-evaluated right before the team leaves for the conference tournament, but a return doesn't look good. After starting 3-8 in Pac-12 play, Utah won five of its final seven games to claim the No. 7 seed in the tournament. They will play the Colorado Buffaloes in the first round Wednesday at 6 p.m. The teams split the season series. Should Utah knock off the Buffs, they would meet No. 2 seed Cal in the second round. That is certainly a better scenario than having to face Stanford in round two — if the Utes win. p.lee@ chronicle.utah.edu j.carroll@chronicle.utah.edu .dailyutahchronicle. co 13 Planned Parenthood a responsible choice for a healthier lift THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE IS HIRING NEWS WRITERS Condoms, birth control - including the "morning after pill," STD testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, pap smears, HPV vaccine, condoms, & more... affordable sexual health care I women, men, teens 9 locations I Salt Lake I West Valley I South Jordan Utah Valley I Ogden I Logan I St George I Park City 1-800-230-7526 I www.ppau.org I 157 S.
