The Runnin' Utes looked like a bunch of deer in the headlights of an oncoming logging truck barreling down the mountain roads of Oregon. In short, it was not a pretty sight. The Utes made the history books Saturday for all the wrong reasons as they recorded the worst loss in school history. In the regularseason finale, the Oregon Ducks completely flattened Utah in a 9448 blowout in Eugene, Ore. The 46-point margin of defeat is the largest in Utah basketball history. The loss also kept the Utes winless on the road this year. Not including the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament earlier in the season, Utah finished 0-12 in true road games. In what has been a dismal first year for Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak, the Utes seemingly saved their worst for last. In the opening minutes, Utah (6-24, 3-15 Pac-12) only trailed the Ducks 7-2, but that is when everything fell apart as Oregon went on a 27-0 run. While the Utes missed nearly every shot they took in the opening half, Oregon (22-8, 13-5 Pac-12) was hitting everything from everywhere, including 10 3-pointers. SPORTS EDITOR Troubles have plagued the Utes during their Pac-12 debut, but that all changed on Senior Day. In the season finale, the Utes looked dominant for the first time as they routed Oregon 65-47 in the Huntsman Center on Saturday. With the win, Utah (15-14, 8-to Pac-12) completed the weekend sweep of the Oregon schools and locked up the No. 7 seed in the upcoming Pac-12 tournament. Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said that, after senior point guard Janita Badon went down with a knee injury, nobody gave them a chance. "I was really proud when we walked out of the Thomas and Mack [Center] last year with the nets around our necks and the trophy in our hands [after the Mountain West Conference championship], but I am just as proud of what this team has done this year as I was at that moment," Levrets said. The Utes might have dominated the Ducks 05-15, 7-10, but they were not firing on all cylinders right from the get-go. Nine minutes into the game, Utah was just 2-for-13 from the field, and they trailed the Ducks 15-7. Utah forwards Michelle Plouffe and Taryn Wicijowski then got the team rolling. The two post players scored 12 points in the next three minutes to give the Utes the lead. Guard Iwalani Rodrigues began to hit deep shots, and the Utes took over. Defensively, Utah clamped down on Oregon. The Ducks made just one field goal in the final io minutes 3o seconds of the first half. The Utes went on a 22-5 run to end the half. After the break, Utah furthered its lead. Like a sandwich made only of bread, Friday's duel against Oregon State got off to a good start for Utah (7-I) and had a good ending, but the middle left much to be desired. The meet, which was expected to be a close battle, ended with the Red Rocks doing just enough in the first rotation to seize control and eventually beat the Beavers 196.575-195.6. Despite the Red Rocks' victory, the average performance created more frustration than satisfaction. "I saw some really spectacular stuff tonight, but I see some just goofy stuff — some mental errors that we just shouldn't be making at this point in the season," said co-head coach Greg Marsden. The spectacular stuff included a season-high 49.425 on vault anchored by the second consecutive 9.975 on the event from Kyndal Robarts. To close the meet, judges seemingly had no qualms about Stephanie McAllister's updated floor routine as she posted a 9.95, despite dealing with an infected hand caused by a cooking accident last week. McAllister won the all-around with a 39.375. Despite those positives, the Utah gymnasts knew it wasn't a great outing. The Red Rocks were forced to count a 9.55 on bars and a 9.575 on beam from Corrie Lothrop after Cortni Beers fell on bars, and Georgia Dabritz fell twice in her season debut on beam. Those four routines marred what could have been Utah's highest score since Feb. 3 at home against Georgia. "I feel like we're not showing all of our full potential," Robarts said. "We did at the beginning of the season, but I think we're kind of letting [early success] get to our heads." Though the win-loss column doesn't mean Parker Lee ing them on senior night," Krystkowiak said in a press release. "We had two points forever — it's not very much fun to play the game that way, and just about every facet we ran into wasn't good." Team CHAD ZAVALA/The Daily Utah Chronicle Georgia Dabritz performs her floor routine Friday against Oregon State. Dabritz's up-and-down performance epitomized the Red Rocks' evening. Despite an average outing, Utah topped OSU 196.575-195.6. |
