Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 Tuesday, November 15, 2011 CROSS COUNTRY Utes finish 8th on heels of Mergaert Alex Rasmussen STAFF WRITER Amanda Mergaert turned in one of her best performances of the year at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships this weekend in Provo as she led the Utes to an eighth-place finish and qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. "Amanda ran another excellent race and did just enough to secure her spot to the NCAA meet again," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "[Mergaert] has been bothered by a hip injury the last three weeks, but she is very mentally tough and [has] been able to continue to race at a very high level." This is Mergaert's second straight year qualifying for the champion- WATKINS FIRST VICTORY continued from Page 6 continued from Page 6 Watkins in setting up plays for teammates. After the Utes got off to a slow start by committing two turnovers on their first three possessions, Watkins brought life to the team. Watkins drew a foul on a 3-point shot and hit the free throw, but that would be one of his only shots from long range. The Hawks had no match for Watkins' physical drives in the first half as he shot 5-for-8 inside the paint and was 3-of-4 from the foul line. In all, Watkins provided 14 of Utah's 3o first-half points. "I just took the opportunities [the Hawks] gave me," Watkins said. "They weren't covering the pick and roll well." Watkins was one of the lone bright spots in an ugly first half that saw the Utes commit seven turnovers and make only 39.1 percent of their shots inside the key. However, numerous San Diego fouls and excellent free-throw shooting allowed the Utes to go into the locker room at the half with a one-point lead. In the second half, Watkins was allowed to distribute the ball more as teammates settled in. He dished out five assists while adding nine more points to his total. Fellow teammates Storey and Jason Washburn (12 points, to rebounds) picked up some of the offensive load. Defensively, Watkins had four rebounds and one steal, enough for the Utes to come away with a victory. With a game at Boise only two days away, Krystkowiak acknowledged the Utes and Watkins have a lot of work ahead of them. "We're happy about the win, but we can't get too excited about a win like this," he said. shooters. We had a hard time with some of our matchups, giving up open 3s, but we ended up just switching everything," he said after the ships, making her the first Utah athlete to qualify for NCAA Championships in consecutive years in more than 15 years. This is the third time in four years that Utah has had an individual qualify for the NCAA championships meet. "[Mergaert] loves to compete and we are all happy for her and know she will represent us well next Monday," Kepler said. game. Utah's execution looked unpolished for much of the game as it tried to defend San Diego's perimeter shooting. The Utes struggled to build a consistent offensive flow during most of the first half, relying heavily on Watkins' Alyssa Abbott barely missed securing an individual qualifying spot by finishing 14th. "Abbott saved the best race of her senior year for last," Kepler said. "She was our first NCAA individual qualifier back in 2008, and I know she wanted to end her career back at that meet and she almost did. She has done as much or more as anyone to elevate our cross scoring and numerous trips to the free-throw line to stay within reach of San Diego. The Utes entered halftime leading 30-29. During the second half, the Utes began to pull away from San Diego, but the Hawks came back in the final country program over the last six years." Finishing the race for the Utes was Rebekah Winterton (43rd overall), Hilary Troutner (75th) and Susannah Hurst (8oth). The top five teams of the day were Colorado, New Mexico, Weber State, BYU and Colorado State. a.rasmussen@ chronicle.utah.edu minutes. The Utes held off a late charge in which San Diego pulled to within 57-55. But with 1.6 seconds left on the clock, Watkins hit one of two free throws, putting the Utes ahead for good. San Diego's Tim Sanders led the Hawks with II points, going 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Senior guard Benji Arvizu struggled against the Ute defense, finishing with just nine points.
