Utah struggled to build any momentum against San Diego Christian (0-2), but thanks to the play of senior Josh Watkins and junior Jason Washburn, the Utes staved off the Hawks with a 58-55 victory. Watkins finished the game with 23 points, one point shy of his career high. With David Foster out, the Utes turned to the lone senior on the team early and often. Watkins scored the team's first nine points in the game before Washburn connected on a dunk. The senior said his teammates gave him the ball as a result of San Diego's defensive attack, and he made the most of his possessions. "I just took the little opportunities they gave me on the floor. I saw they weren't covering the pick and rolls that well, I had an opportunity, and I took it," Watkins said. "Everybody played hard collectively. It's just little mistakes that we have to work on." The Utes went 17-of-38 from the field, just below 45 percent. Along with Watkins, Washburn and freshman guard Kareem Storey were the main offensive weapons for the Utes. All of Storey's points came from the free-throw line, where he finished the night Io-for-12. Washburn finished the game with game-high io rebounds, along with 12 points to earn his first career double-double. "Jiggy gave me a really good back door which allowed me to go to the rim. I hit my jump hook, which I'm known for," Washburn said. "It was just a good night. The ball was falling for me." San Diego shied away from battling the Utes inside. Instead, the Hawks put up a barrage of 3-pointers, finishing 6-for-22 behind the arc. Krystkowiak said his team found it difficult to defend San Diego's assault of 3-point attempts early on, but adapted as the game continued. "That was a shooting team, and it posed a little bit of a problem for us because they're undersized, and they have a lot of perimeter See FIRST VICTORY Page 8 JONATHAN ROYCE/The Daily Utah Chronicle Utah junior guard Kyle Perkins goes after the rebound, which resulted in a jump ball, against San Diego Christian College at the Huntsman Center on Monday. Senior Watkins scores half of team's points Derek Siddoway STAFF WRITER As Utah's lone starter from a season ago, senior point guard Josh Watkins took the reins last night leading the Utes to a 58-55 victory over San Diego Christian College in the season opener in the Huntsman Center. Watkins, who averaged 14.5 points per game, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds last season, picked up where he left off as one of Utah's leading scorers and key playmakers. Finishing the night with 23 points, one shy of his career high, Watkins scored nearly half of the Ute's 58 points. "Without Jiggy [Watkins] it would have been a different game," said head coach Larry Krystkowiak, who earned his first regular season win with Utah. "He had poise and made some plays. He may be smaller, but he will battle." It can be expected that the Utes will continue to rely heavily on Watkins as they advance into the season with a new coaching staff and a young, inexperienced roster. "They're getting used to playing at a higher level," Watkins said of his younger teammates. "They handled it well, everybody played hard." Of the newcomers, Watkins found a groove particularly with freshman guard Kareem Storey.
