Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 10 Wednesday, November 9, 2011 SWIMMING & DIVING Women rise while men sink at UNLV Todd Patton STAFF WRITER The swimming and diving teams competed against the UNLV Rebels in Salt Lake City during the weekend with mixed results. In its seventh meet of the season, the women's side improved its record to 5-2, with an overall score of 164-136. Falling to 2-3 on the season, the men's side lost to the Rebels by an overall score of 128.5-165.5. "[The] UNLV [meet] for the women was really good, we had some girls step up for the first time and win events," said head coach Greg Winslow. "I think it kind of shows our progress as a team overall." The top individual performance for the women came from sophomore Traycie Swartz, who finished in first place in both the 5o free (23.85) and ioo backstroke (56.82). Other top finishers included junior Danielle Caldwell's first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:05.32), sophomore Samantha Zuch winning the zoo breast (1:05.89) and Soo freestyle (5:07.50), and senior Hannah Caron's first place finish in the zoo free (53.25)• NATHAN SWEET /The Daily Utah Chronicle Utah's swimming and diving team competed against UNLV this weekend. The women won and the men lost. HAYS continued from Page 6 on the ground game and the passing game would take a back seat. Despite that, the Wildcats forced Utah's hand by loading up the box early, barricading the running game and daring Hays to make them pay. Hays complied, as he was effective through the air Saturday, earning an average of just fewer than io yards per completion. Eventually, the effects of the threat of Hays going deep opened up the run game for tailback John White, who rushed for more than ioo yards and gave the offense a shot of much-needed balance. "Jon Hays did a great job of mak- ing good decisions and putting the ball into good spots and not forcing the ball into coverage," Whittingham said. "We threw the ball very efficient...Being able to do that allowed John White to get his zoo yards. It loosened up the defense." Hays gives the Utes a solid chance to finish the season with three more wins, which would give them an 8-4 record for the season. All Hays has to do is take care of the ball and soften defenses, and the Utes will be more than satisfied, said offensive coordinator Norm Chow. "He manages the game very well," he said. "We're not expecting him to do any more than that." bubba@chronicle.utah.edu The women divers also dominated the meet, led by Jasmine Matkovic and Ellis Walters, who finished first and second, respectively, in the 3-meter event. In the I-meter dive, Ellis finished second and Matkovic third. Junior Austin Fiascone's victory in the ioo back (51.60) led the men in swimming events. Other top finishers for the men included senior Major Robinson's second-place finish in the 200 back (1:54.68) and junior Karson Applin also finishing second in the zoo fly (51.14). Junior Nelson Foo took first place in the I-meter dive and sophomore Caleb Herrick topped the 3-meter dive competition for the Utah men's divers. "On the men's side, even though it was a loss, it was a huge step forward for us," Winslow said. "Our men really stepped up and fought really well." Up next, the men will take on the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on Thursday followed by both squads competing Friday at the Colorado School of Mines. t.patton@chronicle.utah.edu FANS continued from Page 6 really exciting." With Utah's victory over Arizona on Saturday, the Utes only need one more win to qualify for a bowl game. However, unlike years past when the destination was the Sugar Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl, the Utes are fighting to find their way into the New Mexico Bowl or MAACO Bowl Las Vegas. But no matter where the team might go this postseason, Barnes and Bettilyon will be there cheering on their Utes. j.carroll@ chronicle.utah.edu Register on hronicle's website: DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Home News Sports Outdoors Red Pulse Opinion Blogs Forums Classifieds Contacts Login Ad Rates /0' Gifiznits Top Stories Wednesday, November 12, 2008 News 2008 youth vote breaks records The.Center for Information and Research on Civic .
