Show OCTOBER 28, 2011 10am - 2pm Considering graduate school? Ten important things to consider ft=:RVICES There is no doubt that the world gets more competitive every day. It is becoming more important than ever to attain the highest level of education you can achieve. Many professions, such as medicine, law, pharmacy, veterinary, and dentistry require a "professional" degree. To practice law or medicine, you must have graduated from an accredited law or medical school and passed their qualifying exams like the "bar" exam or medical boards". Some interesting facts are that the first PhD's were awarded in the U.S. in 1861 at Yale University. Prior to that, Americans traveled to Europe to obtain graduate education. By 1900 nearly 250 PhD's were awarded from more than a dozen schools in the Eastern US. By the dawn of the 21st century, nearly over 42,000 PhD's were awarded in the 199899 academic year* (Source - National Science Foundation statistics). Even if you aren't considering the years of study and research that are required for many PhDs, a masters degree may (( be the new standard of education in many professions. A "business degree" was a real achievement after World War II, but an MBA may be required for many similar business jobs today. With the rapidly expanding knowledge base and huge technological advances in the past thirty years, the world is becoming increasingly more competitive. As you may have concluded, getting a graduate degree is increasingly more important for your income, competiveness and career satisfaction. If you are thinking about a graduate degree, here are ten important things to consider: 1. What is the best graduate program for me? What profession(s) does this degree lead to? 2. What schools offer graduate programs in my field of interest? Where am I willing to go? How competitive is it to get admitted? 3. What are the steps in getting accepted to the graduate degree I am considering? Do I need to get outside experience first to be considered or See PLANNING Page 5 GRADUATE SCHOOLS ATTENDING THE FAIR AT Still University www.atsu.edu American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOOM) www.aacom.org A.T.
