Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 Monday, August 29, 2011 German libero adjusts to Ute volleyball, American culture mothertwuckertwittertweet rred more tweets: Ryan McDonald tw STAFF WRITER If you thought your first week of school was overwhelming, imagine handling classes as a freshman while attending daily volleyball practices and getting used to an entirely new culture. Such is the life of Lea Adolph, a freshman libero for the volleyball team who hails from Waltrop, Germany. Coming from a family of volleyball players and having played herself since she was 6, Adolph knew she wanted the sport to be her ticket to an education. "I applied in Germany for a volleyball scholarship," she said. "An agent looked and contacted some universities in the United States. She contacted Utah and Utah told me, 'OK we want you,' so I decided, 'OK, it's Utah.' " Having been in America for a little more than three weeks now, Adolph said there are many things to get used to. Her daily schedule, however, is somewhat familiar. She said it is common in Europe for high-level youth athletes to live, train and attend school all in the same place, which she had done for two years prior to coming to the U. On a typical day, she wakes up in time to meet her teammates at 7 a.m. to lift weights, followed by classes for a few hours. She then grabs a bite to eat before practice from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Following practice, she does homework and eats dinner before going to bed. "It was hard," Adolph said of her first week. "But I'm kind of used to it because of sports boarding school." In addition to the off-court adjustments, Adolph said there is a difference between American volleyball and German volleyball. "It's really different," she said. "Liberos are not allowed to serve in Germany, and you don't have the defensive specialist going on the court every rotation. The first week was very hard because of the different techniques. There are so many different things, but I've gotten used to it." That is apparent, since Adolph cracked head coach Beth Launiere's starting lineup in the U's season opening victory Friday against Weber State. Adolph said the hardest part about coming to the U was leaving her friends and family behind. "My family is so far away," she said. "I miss them." Though she is able to communicate with them via Skype, she said the eight-hour time difference makes it difficult. Despite that challenge, Adolph is excited to be a part of Utah volleyball in the inaugural PacI2 season. "Everybody is so excited, so I'm excited too, because I feel that this is a big deal," she said. "The woman from the agency in Germany told me about it (the conference switch) so I knew that, first of all, it was Division I, which is very good, then PacI2, and that's better." 1 rr tweet a little naraer tVVILtA...1 tweet a little harderspeak twitter need more tweets? speak twitter lot twidiot • maltweeted maltweeted tW twifliot twidiot t twidiot heard on the tweettwi.diot tvavitiwdeleotetd twa I kerm C peal k Wolter need more tweets?t t twl e • twe need more t et "ets?tWitt mothertwycker T Y III • VT • lot twe tlemania r he ets: jot !ot twidiot speak twitter twidiot • maltweeted twee d I of eted ne k titter speak twitter tweet a little harderspeak twitter need more tweets? mothertw cker twitte rtweet tweet re • actwidiot widiotwidiot smp ae twteweittet edr h er de towt tweet ,....m•tneri, uck er twittertw' Pt t nare a r tweet a litt h• . need more twee d widt iot mothertwuc er idiot • speak twitter maltweeted maltweeted spe witter . reed eed mor heard n the tweettt need more tw ets?tWeetWa I kerma t s? 1 lot weeted twee lemaniacim titer in, ' oo tmothertwu• er 'eet d mo th w----tw et a little h der ' tie harcierspeak itter . twe- wycker weet I ■ i. _etlemnia twidiot w . on rii-diitaget i i, :.aitkwteweittetedrth:-: etwa erRT tWi othertwucker tertweet mspeak twitter hear on th e wee d tets: ttwidiot • d deed morewe SPENCER SANDSTROM/The Daily Utah Chronicle Freshman Lea Adolph celebrates during Friday's match against Weber State.
