The win marked the first road victory for RSL since it defeated New England on April 9. After losing Nat Borchers to a red card early in the first half, RSL was forced to play with a man down for the remainder of the match. Borchers' poor choice to hook and take down Chivas midfielder Nick LaBrocca just outside the penalty box could have had bigger ramifications, but, thanks to a few magnificent saves from Real keeper Nick Rimando, it did not affect the team too much. Alvaro Saborio scored in the loth minute, but all indications were that RSL would squander the lead with its shorthanded roster. However, determined not to let another game slip away, Rimando led the way for an RSL shutout. The collective effort from Real's defense was impressive, but the return of heralded defender Jamison Olave certainly helped the cause. Although this win was much needed for playoff contention, it doubled as a morale victory. Miraculously, the much-publicized struggles of RSL did not manifest themselves Saturday night. Instead of letting its lead wilt away, we saw glimpses of the dominant defense we know exists. This match was definitely a step in the right direction toward stopping the woes of Real. It can't be overstated how important this road win was. Having not won on the road since early April, it's a move toward a successful playoff push. However, the questions regarding the team's ability still remain. It's only one game, which isn't valid evidence of a cured RSL. RSL roundup As previously mentioned, this was RSL's first victory on the road since April. During its MLS championship run in 2009, Real won every playoff game on the road. Unless RSL can move up in the standings, road games will be plentiful. Head coach Jason Kreis has been around long enough to realize his team needs better play away from Rio Tinto Stadium if anything is to be made of this season. Having mentioned it in a previous post as a key to a Real playoff berth, I believe Rimando stepped up and played at an extremely high level against Chivas. Giving up eight goals in the past four losses, a shutout was exactly what Rimando needed to regain some swagger and confidence.
