Call or come in today. SPENCER SANDSTROM/The Daily Utah Chronicle Third baseman Trey Nielsen throws to first for an out in a game last season. The returning sophomore was selected as a 2011 Louisville Slugger Freshman AllAmerican last season. The Utah baseball team achieved a banner season in its final Mountain West Conference season. The Utes earned a second-place finish in conference with a 16-7 record and finished 29-21 overall, setting all sights on their Pac-12 debut. This past season's team will go down as one of the better baseball teams in Utah history, largely because of its success at home. "We won a pretty good amount of our home games (12-5 in Salt Lake), so we drew in a lot more fans than previous years," said junior pitcher Tyler Wagner. "Hopefully we'll get even more this year." The season concluded with a 14-1 loss to TCU in the MWC Tournament. However, TCU didn't trump the Utes on every level. Seven Utes earned All-MWC honors with five named to the first team, tying TCU for the most first-team selections. After losing two MLB-caliber players and seven seniors, the Utes will have to work harder than ever to prepare for the tremendous leap in competition they'll face in the Pac-12. "We're going to need to find who can step up and be a leader on and off the field," said Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg. "The Pac-12 is the premier conference in the country for baseball...we're looking forward to the challenge." The most notable departure is first baseman C.J. Cron. The Los Angeles Angels selected Cron, the national slugging percentage leader (.803), as the 17th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft. He finished 2011 with a school record .396 batting average and made history as the only Utah player ever taken in the first round of the draft. Left-handed pitcher Rick Anton was the second Ute drafted for the MLB this year, selected in the eighth round by the Los Angeles See BASEBALL Page D14 74,01(4,001 THE COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES Enhance your major with a minor in Writing :E3 5110 Stoll A the Block Party and Greek Cup to meet students v-""vv'and learn about Greek II COMPLETE BF; CW; DV; HF; IR; QB REQUIRMENTS AT THE SAME TIME OFFERINGS THIS FALL: WRTG 2020 INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL WRITING WRTG 3040 DIGITAL STORYTELLING WRTG 3510 GRAMMAR AND STYLISTICS FOR ACADEMIC WRITING (CW) WRTG 3750 WRTG 3860 INTRODUCTION TO RHETORIC (HF) WRTG 3900 DISCOURSE AND COMMUNITIES (HF) WRTG 4030 VISUAL RHETORIC: WORD/IMAGE/ARGUMENT (QB) WRTG 4830 DOCUMENT DESIGN AND USABILITY WRTG 4905 MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES DISCOURSE RHETORIC, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES (BF, HF) for more information contact the uwp 801-581-7090 www.hum.utah.edu/uwp |
