Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Monday, April 4, 2011 7 BASEBALL UNLV pitcher steals one of two on Saturday Bubba Brown STAFF WRITER After getting out-dueled by UNLV pitcher Tanner Peters on Friday night, Utah rebounded Saturday before Sunday's game was canceled because of the snow, giving the Utes a series split. Peters threw a complete game against Utah (12-1o, 5-2 MWC) on Friday as the Utes gave up five runs in the final two innings in a 6-1 loss. "(Peters) was as good as we've seen all year," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "He's got a great mix— good fastball, great breaking ball, great change-up. He's tough." Utah starter Rick Anton kept pace with Peters through the first seven innings. After a rough first inning in which he gave up a run and threw more than 3o pitches, Anton shut the Rebels down (191o, 2-6 MWC) through the rest of his seven innings of work. "They got after him early, but I was proud of Rick," Kinneberg said. "The first inning kind of killed him because he threw so many pitches, so we had to pull him after the seventh. He was still strong, but we've still got a lot of innings to play this year." The Utes tied the game I-1 in the fourth on Cody Guymon's RBI single, which scored C.J. Cron. Cron reached base earlier in the game to extend his team-leading 3o-game hitting streak. Neither team scored again until the eighth inning, when the Rebels tallied four off Utah reliever Kes- ley Kondo. The righthander hit the first batter he faced and allowed a single to the second batter of the inning, putting runners on first and third. After striking out UNLV's leading hitter Rance Roundy, Kondo gave up four runs, giving Peters all he needed to finish off the Utes. Guymon, who had two hits and was one of the few Utes to be successful against Peters, said it came down to which team broke the deadlock. "Definitely the team that got that second run was going to get the momentum," Guymon said. "Unfortunately, it was them." Saturday, the Utes rebounded from both Friday's loss and an early 4-I deficit to claim an 8-4 win. FOOTBALL COACH continued from Page 6 continued from Page 6 catch from Shreve and a 33-yard catch from Robles—and led all receivers in yards with 70. Freshman Dres Anderson had the longest touchdown catch of the scrimmage, a 45-yard bomb from Shreve, and freshmen Karl Williams and Westlee Tonga also caught touchdowns. Whittingham said Robles and Shreve are continuing to progress but still have a ways to go. He pointed to the lackluster completion percentage as something that must improve. Things aren't nearly as tumultuous on the defensive side of the ball, and it showed by the general lack of blitzing Friday, instead opting to run mostly straight-base sets. Whittingham said that was just a sign of the defense being more settled than the offense in the middle of a scheme overhaul. The defense tallied eight sacks, including two apiece from freshmen linebackers Eric Dago and J.T. Strong. Trevor Reilly recorded an interception as well. Leading returning tacklers from the defensive line Star Lotulelei and James Aiono did not participate. weeks after the March 12 firing of Jim Boylen as head coach after a fouryear stop with the program that yielded one conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth, but no wins in March Madness and just a 69-6o overall record (32-32 in MWC play). The Utes went 13-18 (6-10 MWC) this year with a team led almost exclusively by first-year junior-college transfers. In the end, the high personal turnover that marred Boylen's tenure, including four players transferring at the end of the 2009-2010 season, might be the coach's lasting legacy at the U. Among the four j.hibbard@ chronicle.utah.edu The Rebels got three runs off Utah starter Brock Duke in the second inning on a walk and three hits. The Utes got one of those runs back in the third when Tyler Relf reached on an error and scored on James Brooks' single, but the Rebels re-extended their lead to four with an unearned run off Utah reliever Joe Pond. Utah finally broke through for a big inning in the sixth. The Utes loaded the bases with no outs before Austin Shackelford's single scored Michael Beltran. After Trey Nielsen struck out, Jo Jo Sharrar smashed a three-run double into the right-centerfield gap, giving the Utes their first lead of the series. The Utes added three more in the seventh for an 8-4 cushion be- fore Tyler Wagner pitched a nearperfect eighth and ninth to close out the Rebels. Pond, who went four innings without giving up an earned run, got the win. "Joe Pond gave us important innings to keep it close," Kinneberg said. "You hope it's just a matter of time before you start swinging the bats, and the hit from Jo Jo gave us a big lift." Cron missed Saturday's game after hurting his leg Friday, though he stayed in for the remainder of that game. The Utes will face the Salt Lake Bees on Tuesday in an exhibition. Along with his coaching career, Krystkowiak is still the all-time leader in both scoring and rebounding at his alma mater, Montana, and was a second-round draft pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 1986 NBA Draft. Krysto, as the coach is nicknamed, spent nine years in the league with six different teams, his longest stint being with the Milwaukee Bucks.
