Asiata was injured during the game but returns healthy this season for the Utes. Corbin Godfrey O STAFF WRITER FREE WI-FI , The Utes are coming into the 2010 season with as much depth as the school has ever seen with a dominant running game behind the newest "thunder and lightning" in college football—Matt Asiata and Eddie Wide. Asiata started off last season as Utah's No. I back, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury just four games into the season against Louisville, slamming the brakes on what looked like a phenomenal final season for the senior. Losing Asiata knocked the wind out of Utah fans briefly, before Wide stepped in and emerged as • )) TWO CR EE K )FFN= HOUSE Fz4a U4 04"' C4441444, William Browning Building Mines And Earth Science Building Lobby 1320E.200S. www.thepie.com c.godfrey@ chronicle.utah.edu You Call We Bring We Deliver "Award Winning" Pizza The 582-0195 the Utes' saving grace, rushing for ioo yards in a school-record six consecutive games. With Asiata back after being granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA and Wide returning for his senior season, Utah's ground game has never looked so strong. "This is the best crew I've ever had personally," said running back coach Aaron Alford. "It's the best since I've been here, and the best I've seen as a whole going through the depth chart." Asiata said he feels as good as he ever has in a Utah uniform, and Alford has been impressed with what he has seen from Asiata thus far. "(Asiata) looks great," Alford said. "He's really healed up, and he's excited, and he's a team captain and is ready to just enjoy his final year and put it all out on the table." After returning to the team, Asiata said there is no competition between Wide and himself, but Asiata simply looks at their return to the team this year as a chance to make the team stronger. "We are all working together as a running back crew," Asiata said. "There is no selfish play in our group. Everyone gets their chance to put on a show when they get their time on the field or in scrimmage time." One of the biggest questions the team faced this off season was which of the two backs would get the majority of the carries. "It's one-A and one-B," Alford said. "Those guys are the front two, and that's who the ball is going to go to, and then we know the rest of the group is prepared should that time come where they need to carry the football, and we feel comfortable with those guys." Should Asiata or Wide not be available, Utah's depth at running back extends beyond the two seniors. Recently moving into the third slot on the depth charts is junior college transfer Tauni Vakapuna, followed by redshirt sophomore Sausan Shakerin. The Utah backfield is stacked to say the least this season, and barring any injuries, should leave defenses dazed and confused. "Hopefully we break some face masks on the way to the end zone," Alford said. "That is what I expect to see. But obviously we will be facing some great opponents, starting with Pitt, and the number one thing I'm looking for from the running backs is just being physical and the rest will take care of itself."
