The Henan Airlines plane with 91 passengers and five crew crashed late Tuesday in a grassy area near the Lindu airport on the outskirts of Yichun, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Five of those onboard were children, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said, but their fates were not immediately known. The crash and subsequent fire were so severe that little of the fuselage remained, though the charred tail was still largely intact. China Central Television said eight of the victims were found 65 to ioo feet from the plane's wreckage in a muddy field. The Brazilian-made Embraer E-190 jet had taken off from Heilongjiang's capital of Harbin shortly before 9 p.m. and crashed a little more than an hour later while arriving at Yichun, Xinhua said. Yichun is a city of about 1 million people located zoo miles from the Russian border. A middle-aged man who survived the crash told CCT there was bad turbulence as the plane descended, then several big jolts that caused the luggage to come crashing down from the overhead bins. "After we stopped, the people in the back were panicking and rushed 25 Wednesday sunny 83°/57° •Getting U Started: Student Services Fair: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. @ Union Patio • Student Job and Volunteer Fair: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. @ Union Ballroom •Sundance Institute Film Series presents"Motorcycle Diaries": 9 p.m. @ Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre • UMFA Film Screening: Danzon: 26 Thursday 6 p.m. @ Utah Museum of Fine Arts Mostly sunny 86°/59° • University of Utah Farmers Market: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. @ Tanner Plaza at the Union •TRAILS Indoor Stationary Handcycling Classes: 5 p.m. @ U Health Care Rehabilitation Center - Outpatient Physical Therapy Gym • Presenter's Office Film Series, (500) Days of Summer: 6 to 8:30 p.m. @ Post Theatre Weather from the department of atmospheric sciences: http://forecast.utah.edu Chinese paramilitary policemen stand guard near the Henan Airlines plane that crashed on landing in Yichun in northeast China's Heilongjiang province Wednesday. Authorities say 42 people were killed. to the front," the unidentified man, who had no visible injuries, said in an interview from a hospital bed. "We were trying to open the (emergency exits) but they wouldn't open. Then the smoke came in...within two or three minutes or even a minute, we couldn't breathe. I knew something bad was going to happen." The man said he and a few others escaped from a hole in the wall of the cabin near the first row of seats, then ran from the burning wreckage. CCTV showed firefighters dousing the burning plane with hoses and later digging through the wreckage of the jet. Xinhua said early Wednesday that 43 bodies were recovered within hours of the disaster and 53 people were hospitalized, most with broken bones. It later changed the death toll to 42 with 54 injured. The Yichun city Communist Party published an online list of victims with 42 names. Wang Xuemei, vice mayor of Yichun, told CCTV that three survivors were in critical condition but gave no details. Xinhua quoted Hua Jingwei, an Yichun publicity official, as saying the jet broke into two pieces while approaching the runway and some passengers were thrown from the cabin before the plane hit the ground. Tea party aims to challenge veterans in 3 states WASHINGTON—Rep. Kendrick Meek cinched Florida's Senate Democratic nomination by defeating political upstart Jeff Greene on Tuesday, and veteran politician Bill McCollum battled novice Rick Scott in the state's GOP gubernatorial contest as voters weighed the merits of establishment candidates vs. wealthy outsiders. Elsewhere, Sens. John McCain and Lisa Murkowski counted on voters to reward political experience as they faced spirited Republican primary challenges in Arizona and Alaska io weeks before the general election. Nominating contests in five states—Vermont also was voting, and Oklahoma held GOP runoffs—highlighted dominant themes of this unpredictable election year, including anti-establishment anger and tea party challenges from the right. As the first polls of the night closed, Meek toppled Greene, a big-spending real estate tycoon whose links to boxer Mike Tyson and former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss drew headlines, in the Democratic Senate nomination fight. The four-term congressman will compete against Republican Marco Rubio, who easily secured the GOP nod, and Gov. Charlie Crist, a former Republican who is running as an independent, in November. "Floridians sent a clear message—they want a real Democrat representing them in the U.S. Senate," Meek said. Crews working to battle southern Idaho fire BOISE, Idaho—Firefighters in the southern Idaho desert are hoping cooler weather Tuesday can help them gain ground on a wildfire that has scorched more than 510 square miles, or an area larger than the city of Los Angeles. The lightning-sparked fire was fueled by strong winds Sunday and Monday, blackening more than 327,000 acres and becoming the nation's largest, actively battled wildfire since it ignited Saturday. So far, crews have contained io percent of a fire burning across a desolate, flat landscape of sagebrush and cheatgrass. Susan Marzec, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management, said the fire so far is not posing a threat to homes or communities, but has destroyed some ranch buildings in an area about 35 miles south of Glenns Ferry Marzec said crews are working around the clock before the arrival of strong winds forecast later this week. The crew increased Tuesday to more than boo firefighters, up from the 375 on the scene Monday. "Right now, we've got crews all the way around the fire, working on building a line all around it," Marzec said. "The potential for this fire is still there. There could be some pretty bad winds on Thursday, and if that happens, this could take off again." Officials used helicopters and jet tankers spraying fire retardant Sunday to slow fire growth fueled by wind gusts that reached 70 mph. Utility crews were called to the region Monday to help restore power lost when fire burned down power poles and lines, cutting electricity to more than 8o customers. www.dailyutahchronicle.com Online today • • Crimson Nights photo gallery: Check out photos of past U parties at www.dailyutahchronicle.com/news. The Butte Report: assistant sports editor's blog The Chronicle think "3o for 3o" is the best thing ESPN has done since they put Steve "The Snapper" Jones and Bill Walton together for NBA broadcasts. Most of the documentaries chosen—Run Ricky Run, for example—don't shy away from mixing in a little cheese and drama into a sports story. As long as there is a legitimately interesting sports figure involved (and not the 1982 Baltimore Colts marching band—watching that one is the biggest regret of my life to date) it seems to work. Enter Michael Jordan in an adverse time in his life. Pure gold. The hardest thing for ESPN was probably picking which MJ documentary to use. You know someone did one on the time when he was cut from the varsity team his sophomore year of high school. There was definitely one based on Sam Smith's book "The Jordan Rules."
