Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 GYMNASTICS RUGBY continued from Page 6 continued from Page 6 sick for the past two weeks with strep throat. However, the rest of the team rallied back to earn a 49.425, a season high by more than .2. Deetscreek, Robarts and Jacq Johnson tied their career highs. Deetscreek tied with Gael Mackie for the win on bars with a 9.9. The beam continued to be a problem for Utah in the third rotation of the night. As the second gymnast up, Beers again fell and later in the lineup, the normally flawless Deetscreek also fell, earning the Red Rocks their third-lowest score of the season on the beam with a 48.625. Bijak managed to stay on the beam after landing a tumbling pass on one foot. "I felt like I was off in the air, and I did not want to get off the beam yet, so I just pulled it off," Bijak said. "I could not believe I did that, but it was fun." Although emotions ran high at the beginning of the meet for the departing seniors, they said the mistakes on the beam can't be blamed on that. "It was really emotional at the beginning, but I was back in the zone once we started warm-ups," Bijak said. "While I was up there I didn't really think about that." The team bounced back on the floor with a huge 49.550 score. Deetscreek and DiLuzio earned a io from one of the judges, scoring a 9.95 and 9.975, respectively. "I just tried to go out and take it one thing at a time and enjoy it and enjoy all of the fans—there were so many tonight," DiLuzio said. "I just tried to do what I usually do." With no more time left to prepare for postseason, Marsden said he was pleased with his team on three of the events but that something must change for the team to be successful on beam. "Obviously, the one event that we haven't resolved our issues on is balance beam," Marsden said. "I promise we train so much better than we are competing right now We're going to do a lot of beam routines because I feel like we've got to try something different for them to feel like they are unbelievably prepared. At the same time, they're going to have to work on the mental approach. From a coaching perspective, I feel like they're trying too hard to be perfect rather than allowing their bodies to do what they know how." Utah will have a week without competition before hosting the West Regionals on April io at the Huntsman Center. pfieldsted@ chronicle.utah.edu with tries scored by Matt Wunderli and lock Mike Kimball. A turnover in the 37th minute, however, gave BYU the opportunity to capitalize on a struggling forward line that was unable to contain the Cougars during the first half. Going into the second half, BYU held a 21-14 lead. The game turned, however, when freshman Naki Angilau intercepted a BYU pass and made an 85-yard run to tie the game. Minutes later, Kimball held onto the ball as the team forced its way through the Cougar defense. Freshman Hayden McMullin successfully kicked both conversions to put the team 29-21. An offsides call in the 57th minute allowed McMullin to kick a penalty goal to give Utah a 31-21 lead. Utah shut down BYU on points the majority of the second half, holding the Cougars to a single penalty goal in the 67th minute and a try in the final seconds of the game. Although BYU had the opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds, the Cougars were unable to successfully kick on the conversion, allowing the Utes to hold on to a final score of 31-29. "We just really stuck together in the second half," Burdette said. "The boys stuck to the game plan and didn't deter from it, even when they might have been tempted to. Sticking to the plan paid off for us. I'm really proud of how we played." For Utah, the win validated the longheld belief that the Utes are as good as top powerhouses in the nation such as BYU and California. "We played as a team and it paid off for us," said senior Camden Burd. "This how the BYU-Utah game is supposed to Monday, March 29, 2010 THIEN SOK/The Daily Utah Chronicle After closing out the regular season with a win Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium over national powerhouse BYU, the Utah rugby team will prepare for the regional and national playoffs starting Friday. be played." Utah next heads to the regional playoffs hosted by Central Washington University, which will determine the team's seeding in the national playoffs later this month. The team hopes finishing the regular season with a win will help it prepare for the playoffs. "We can't let ourselves get compla- cent with how we play," Burdette said. "We need to work on always getting better. We have to look past the win and on towards the regional playoffs." The Scrummin' Utes will face Washington University in the first round of the Pacific Coast region playoffs Friday. k.price@ chronicle.utah.edu BASKETBALL continued from Page 6 CITY ACADEMY Too Good to Remain Salt Lake's Best Kept Secret! From that game forward, the Utes had a different swagger about them and closed the season by winning six of their past seven games and finished the season tied for third place heading into the MWC Tournament. Utah marched its way right through the first three rounds of the tournament, including a beat-down on the No. 1-seeded Horned Frogs, 69-57, while on its way to its second consecutive MWC Championship game. With four minutes left, Utah held an eight-point lead over San Diego State in the championship game, but the Aztecs made a late run and forced the game into overtime in which the more-experienced San Diego State team went on to claim the MWC Championship. Utah will lose two of its alltime greats in Whipple and Halie Sawyer, whose names will be in the Utah record books in several categories. TYLER COBB/The Daily Utah Chronicle Head coach Elaine Elliott's team has a bright future after the experience the young team got from the conference tournament final and two NIT games. The Utes will also lose senior Sasha McKinnon, who has battled several injuries but has come off the bench at times this season as a spark for the Utes.
