Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 4 CENSUS continued from Page 1 • Stay in the loop by registering for the email editions at the student body—might not know they're supposed to fill one out. "I thought I didn't have to," said Adeel Muhammad, a graduate student in mathematics from Pakistan. "It came in the mail, and I just ignored it." That's what the Office of Student Affairs is concerned about. "We're going to have to work with (international students) more closely," said Barb Snyder, vice president Monday, March 29, 2010 for student affairs. It doesn't take long to fill out the census. "It's kind of alarmingly simple," said Kathryn Morris, a non-matriculated student studying speech and hearing science. To combat at least the first two issues, student affairs has been working closely with the housing office during Spring Break to put together a publicity campaign in the Residence Halls, where most international students live, to inform students about the importance of filling out the census. The federal government uses census data to divvy out congressional seats and divide up millions of dollars in federal funds each year until the next census. For instance, the Utah Legislature declined to give the U any part of the $150 million its administrators asked for last month to repair the campus' widely damaged electrical and water systems. The U closed sections of the Life Sciences Building because water pipes that need to be replaced were bursting open. The data is also used in federal tuition grant and loan programs, so a complete count of a university's students in can mean more money for higher education in Utah down the road. Whatever increase comes of it would be on top of President Barack Obama's expansion of the Federal Pell Grants last year and the U's increased funding for its need- and merit-based loan by $700,000 and $600,000, respectively. This would come at a time when the U administration approved increasing tuition about 9 percent. That decision becomes official if the Board of Regents votes in favor of it Sunday. m.mcfall@ chronicle.utah.edu 2010 Express your brain "Your engagement specialists" Become an opinion columnist_ c.blake@chronicle.utah.edu self-sustainable flow REDUCE ••• REUSE ••• RECYCLE 100% Wind-powered with organic products from the Earth to the bottle The 13EE NUT; 801-531-8182 • 888-825-46:7 www.beernutcom • 1200 a FREE small McCafe ® real fruit smoothie no purchase necessary Expires 4/30/10.
