Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Thursday, March 18, 2010 CELEBRATION continued from Page 1 John Chatelain, a former U student and lead singer of The Wailing O'Sheas, said he was impressed with the event and what it does for the students. "It is a necessary holiday that I hadn't seen celebrated correctly before," Chatelain said, referring to past St. Patrick's Day celebrations at the U. TUITION continued from Page 1 student fees. The administration was concerned it would have to increase tuition by a doubledigit percentage to cover the damage of a severe budget cut from the Legislature, Pershing said. But lawmakers decided they would cut higher education's budget by only an additional 4.5 percent on top of last year's 9.5 percent cut. UPC hopes to build on the success and expand the event in future years. "It's fantastic," Chatelain said. "The more activities they do on campus, the more friendly and the more cohesive the student body will be." After the success UPC leaders saw with Oktoberfest, organizers were excited to put on another event that brought more culture to the U campus. "It brings cultural awareness to cultures that aren't prominent in Utah," said Alison Tuft, director of arts and special events board for UPC. Students have been working on organizing and planning the event for about two months, said Michelle Brown, the assistant director of programming. "You can see by the attendance that everyone is just The Regents tends to push back against double-digit percentage increases anyway, said Paul Brinkman, associate vice president of budget and planning. Tuition covers about 43 percent of the cost to run the U, so raising tuition shouldn't and can't cover all the damage anyway, Pershing said. The tuition increase would become official if the Regents approves it at their April I meeting. super pumped and having a good time," Brown said. Although it is a light-hearted event, the importance of recognizing the holiday was not lost on U students. "I think it's important because it's a part of our history," said Megan McPharlin, a sophomore in graphic design, whose family is Irish on her father's side. m.allam@ chronicle.utah.edu Sul/ma m.mcfall@ chronicle.utah.edu CLEAN UP 1-(tire for To participate: You must be 18 years of age or older, in good health and must not be taking any prescription medication.
