Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, February 23, 2010 TRACK & FIELD SOCCER Utes shine in last regular meet Kelsey Price STAFF WRITER The Utah track and field team competed in its final regular meet of the indoor season last weekend at Weber State in the Wildcat Tune-Up. The Utes faced BYU, Utah Valley, Southern Utah, Weber State and Idaho State. The weekend was successful for Utah. The Utes had three event champions, with all athletes placing in the top five of each event. In all, the team had eight top-three finishes. "(The meet) was the final opportunity for (us) to compete prior to our indoor conference championships next weekend," said head coach Kyle Kepler. On Thursday, Utah throwers competed in their respective events as a warm-up to the upcoming championship. The throwing events—which were held in an elementary school as opposed to Weber facilities—saw a little bit of unforeseen action, as the low ceiling resulted in many throwers missing their mark. Several of the throws narrowly missed the spectators, and the ceiling frame sustained some damage when one of the throws hit the ceiling with a fair amount of force. Despite the limitations of the facility, Utah was successful in the throws. Senior Sarah Grimm won the weight throw with a toss of 18.05 meters. In shotput, Freshman Nikkie Rudder came in fifth with a toss of 43-07.25 feet. "Grimm continued to regain her consistency as she won the weight throw," Kepler said. "We also had the third and ninth place finishers as well. Freshman Anneli Stahl had a huge (personal record) that landed beyond the 57-foot mark, and sophomore Kastin Frostl crossed the 46-foot line for the first time." On field Saturday, freshman Haley McAllister competed in the long jump, and sophomores Langley Iverson, Mandi Weatherspoon and Brianna LeRoy were in the high jump. McAllister jumped for a distance of 18 feet 01.25 inches, earning her a third-place finish. Leroy posted a mark of 5 feet 3.25 inches, and Iverson and Weatherspoon finished first and second respectively, with clearing heights of 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 5 inches. Three of the top five finishes in pole vault were Utes. Sophomore Klaudia Rokossa tied for first with Idaho State's Nicole Yurek, posting a clearing height of II feet 6 inches. Ute Laryssa Simpson cleared six inches be- 7 continued from Page 6 low Rokossa but still came in third place. In the triple jump, Ashley Patterson proved her supremacy over the competition with a jump of 37 feet 9.5 inches. A difference of four feet separated her and second-place finisher, UVU's Jamie Daniels. On the asphalt, Utah continued its dominance over the competition. Chelsey Kaplar posted a time of 8.3o seconds in the 55-meter hurdles in qualifications, but in finals she won the race with 8.35. Teammate Leroy finished second with a time of 8.51. In the 55-meter dash, senior Whitney Wellington finished fourth with a time of 7.28 seconds. The only distance event of the meet was the mile run, which featured several entrants for the Utes. Four out of the top five finishes belonged to Utah. Jenny McCune and Rachel Schmalzle took first and second, with 5 minutes 33.68 seconds and 5:36.15, respectively. Utah is eager to begin what assistant coach Burke Bockman dubbed "conference week" as the Utes compete Thursday through Saturday at Mountain West Conference Championships. k.price@ chronicle.utah.edu several positions for us." Krantz—who captained the Skyline Eagles and received All-State honors twice— is expected to be a big contribution, though Manning said he is uncertain whether she will play up top or in the midfield. For the 2009 season, she had five goals and led the Eagles to the state playoffs, though her team lost in the first round 3-1. "Lexi is a ball of athletic energy," Manning said. "Her tireless running, physical power and leaping ability stand out immediately, and she is extremely competitive." The Utes are also excited about midfielder Muirhead, whose club team recently won the national championship. Muirhead was FOOTBALL continued from Page 6 and will look to aid in Jordan Wynn's progression. "When we hired Brian (Johnson) to coach the quarterbacks, the intent was to assemble the best staff possible, rather than just filling the open position," Whittingham said. "Jay (Hill) will move over to the defensive side of the ball and coach the cornerbacks, the position he excelled at as a player and coached his first two years on the staff. Dave (Schramm) can coach about any position on the field, which gave us some real flexibility on that front." Strong showing by Utes on All-Academic team Following the 2009 season, the MWC named the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Midfielder of the Year in 2008. She and the other recruits from California have yet to play their senior season, since girls' soccer plays in the spring opposed to the fall. Utah is also bringing two new goalkeepers into the mix, with Hallie Koeppen from Idaho and Utah native Cheyanne Mulcock. "With the goalkeepers, Cheyanne and Hallie are talented and have championship experience," said Manning. Although the new players will have to wait until August to join their new team, Utah will have five exhibition matches this spring. In March, the Utes travel to College Station for a doubleheader against Sam Houston State and Texas A&M. Utah will take on rival BYU on April io in Provo. Kick-off time is to be determined. k.price@chronicle.utah.edu released its All-Academic team earlier this month, and Utah was well represented by 20 Utes earning spots to the team. To be considered for the team, not only do players need a cumulative GPA of 3.o, but they also need to be a starter or major contributor to the team as well. Leading the team with a GPA of 3.72 was freshman wideout Luke Matthews, who played in all 13 games in 2009 and made two starts. The complete list consists of Zane Beadles, Tony Bergstrom, Tysen Clements, Kepa Gaison, Ben Hendy, Jamel King, Richard Maires, Matt Martinez, Matthews, Trevor Moss, Caleb Schlauderaff, Sean Sellwood, Derrick Shelby, Tevita Stevens, Justin Taplin-Ross, Zane Taylor, Ben Vroman, Chaz Walker, J.J.
