SPORTS EDITOR Scalley honored by rivals.com After what some are calling the strongest recruiting class in Utah's history, rivals.com has honored Utah's Morgan Scalley as the nation's top non-BCS recruiter, as well as one of the top 25 recruiters in the country. Scalley is beginning his third year as Utah's safeties coach but earned the honor in only his first year as Utah's recruiting coordinator. Scalley made his presence known in the Houston area, where he was able to bring in recruits such as Archie Muniz and wideout Terrell Reese, who was rated as a Rivals top-25o receiver in the country. In all, Scalley was responsible for bringing in five three-star recruits and one four-star recruit in a class that rivals.com ranked as the best non-BCS class in the country. Not only was this year's signing class ranked as No. 32 in the country, it was also the highest ranking a Mountain West Conference school had ever received by the website. Throughout the third period, the teams appeared to be at a stalemate. The deadlock was broken when team captain Mike Vrtis scored the winning goal with 2 minutes 15 seconds remaining. "We knew all game that if we get the puck to the net, they're going to start going in," Vrtis said. "We knew they'd come when we actually needed it." Although the Utes enjoyed triumph after the BYU win, they were subject to despair the following night. Their first game against Montana State left a bitter taste in the mouth of all in attendance. Utah was outplayed in every observable aspect of the game and fell 6-2 to the Hellcats. "I thought it was pure laziness," said forward Andrew Reed, who scored the first goal of the game. Utah's marquee game was against BYU on Thursday, and it was the highlight of the Utes' weekend. The 5-4 victory marked the second win against BYU in as many games. This win came in nearly the same fashion as the thrilling game in Provo. Once again, the Utes found themselves down 3-1 to their rivals, but they were able to claw back and get the victory. Instead of the first-line stars who saved Utah, it was the supporting cast who brought the Utes out of their hole. Forward TJ Smith and defensemen Kevin Dieterle and Charles German scored goals in the second period to tie the game at four. The Utes competed this past weekend in the Nevada Invitational. Colorado took first in the invitational, with New Mexico and Denver rounding out the top three. Junior Eva Huckova earned her first of two podium finishes on day one of the invitational, where the Slovakia native tied for second in the giant slalom with a time of 2 minutes 4.41 seconds. Although Huckova excelled, the men's alpine team struggled to find a rhythm, with no skiers finishing in the top io. "We had some great performances today and some that were not so great," said director of skiing Eli Brown. With the second day of the invitational came another podium finish for Huckova, who finished second in the slalom with a run of 1:26.49. Huckova's second podium finish of the weekend brought her total on the season to a team-leading five podium finishes.
