Show 5 Monday, November 26,2007 VOICES www.dailyutahchronide.com Service is a cornerstone of greek life I t has been a good semester for just about everyone on Greek Row. In the last couple of weeks, some houses have had successful philanthropy weeks, and some of the pledges have finished their quest to become active members of their respective fraternities or sororities. I don't think enough credit is given to these people who give so much of their time and talent. They have brought a lot of energy to make our time here more enjoyable and memorable. Service; in my opinion, is one of the greatest ways to define your character. Three weeks ago, Sigma Chi, the fraternity of which I have the honor of being a member, put on its annual Derby Days, which is a whole week devoted to raising money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Each year, the fraternity's proconsul is in charge of Derby Days. This year, Proconsul Winston Waltman put an incredible week together. "Our goal is always to get as much money raised as we can this week," Waltman said. "Anything over io grand is a good number for me to shoot for, and this year, we achieved that." Waltman said that many members of Greek Row contributed, and he is happy that people were so generous and Jielpful to the cause. Over the years, Sigma Chi has done well to help the fight against cancer. Jon M. Huntsman Sr., one of our many great alumni, has matched dollar-for-dollar what the fraternity raised and always helped us in an incredible way to make this week a great experience. We are not the only group on Greek Row to accomplish such >;,• TlMMY CANNON things. I don't think that I would be wrong in saying that other fraternities and sororities have similar achievements. It is an amazing thing to see so many members come together, if only for one week, for a great cause to help make this society better. As far as service is concerned, I, along with other members and pledges of Sigma Chi, helped an underprivileged school have a Halloween party. I could go on and on about the great things that members of Greek On "Letter: Shame on Whittingham" (Nov. 21, 2007) Opinion " • ",<:-T Row have done, are doing and will do for the community. I feel that we make a great contribution to the U itself. Two of the finest people I have the pleasure of calling friends, current Associated Students of the University of Utah President Spencer Pearson and Vice President Basim Matiwala, are also members of Sigma Chi and have greatly helped to show how members of Greek Row can make a difference at theU. So do I have a point in explaining the good things Greek Row does and a reason for this article? Absolutely! In the last two years, Greek Row as a whole has seen a decline in the number of people who rush the greek system and become members. Why is this? Could it be because of the LDS versions of greek organizations? Possibly. Don't get me wrong, what ^ $ ^ \ * On "Utah vs- BYU: The Edge" (Cody Brunner, Nov. 21, 2007) Sports 1- PHMCANHOWnit Defy VtohO<toflJ<lt w LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rivalry Week is not about hating people Editor: I wanted to give you feedback on your insert (Rivalry Guide, Nov. 22). At first, I was very impressed. I'm a die-hard Cougar married to a die-hard Ute. We have a very fun marriage this time of year. I do root for the Utes at times. Sometimes, it is only on the outside. I was in Hawaii last week, hoping that the Utes would be able to move on in the National Invitation Tournament. I had a blast wearing my BYU "Fully Invested" T-shirt to Thanksgiving with his family. The thing that makes me sick is to see his 12-year-old niece full of total hatred toward BYU. I laughed and told her I wore that shirt just for her because I knew that she would react that way and gave her a big hug. Why can't people have fun with it Editor: Once again, another asinine performance from our enlightened advocate of diversity, Nicholas Pappas ("Say yes to a 'Zion curtain,'" Nov. 12.). The word "Mormon" doesn't need to appear for readers to understand who Pappas is deriding in this column. I find it interesting to see the overt use of outdated Mormon stereotypes when such pains are taken to ensure political correctness about any other group. Is referring to the average Utahn 3:57 PM MST Oh, boo hoo. Maybe the onside kick was a bit much, but you have no room to complain about how "rude" we are when your team didn't even bring it. It's not rude to win. It's not even rude to try to win. What were we supposed to do when we came back from the half? Sit on the 50-yard line and wait for Wyoming to catch up to our 40-point lead? I think not. What about your rude coach who let his "big Irish mouth" go running at a pep rally and dissed us by saying coming here was a guaranteed win? Were we supposed to prove him right? Are we supposed to look up to the man who utilized an obscene gesture because he couldn't take his own incompetence? I think not. Truth is, when you want respect, you gotta give it. They disrespected us, and we still gave them the respect of not running our mouths on them. We let the team do the talking, and that was the classiest thing we could have done. If they're gonna make a guarantee or walk in thinking they're invincible, we're gonna do all we can to pop their over-inflated egos. That's football. As far as you not setting foot in Utah again, good riddance. We have no use for whiners. Man up or stay out. posted 11/21/07 @ 2:17PM MST Was this article written by a zoobie, or are they caught up on Thanksgiving dinner already? Mack is clearly a better running back than Unga, having more rushing yards in two fewer games than Unga (being that the first game was for Asiata, and the next two games were between three running backs). As for the wide receivers, it's all relative to how much the offense throws. Is it really fair to say we have inferior receivers because our offense decides to run more than pass? Hardly not, and being that we have three or four dynamic receivers compared to those two on the other team, it is hardly even comparable that they are inferior. It is all relative to the pass game, and Utah's choice of running more than passing is hardly an indication of a lack of quality in our receiving corps. Last but not least, the two coaches have almost identical records. However, which of the two have beaten a No. 25 ACC Georgia Tech, No. 11 UCLA and Big East Louisville AT Louisville? With a more difficult schedule, an almost identical coaching record and a tougher situation to walk into, Whittingham is the superior head coach. posted 11/23/07 @ 2:29 PM MST Craig posted 11/23/07 @ 6:51 PM MST I would also say that Utah has a better all-around wide receiving core, as BYU passes to backs and tight ends more than the article accounts for. Yeah, and Joe's bird was a classy thing, huh? After he bragged about guaranteeing a win, we had to hand you your butt. And please stay out of Utah, no one wants you here. It's apparent that Pappas has an axe to grind with the Utah establishment. I just wish he would engage in those issues with wellthought arguments and logic rather than inane mischaracterizations of Utah and its people. .* Colorado Ute and not teach their kids so much hate? Anyway, your articles were really good, until I got to the back part of the paper. I guess it's pretty tough to keep it unbiased. So, thanks for trying. I am sorry that Ryan Shattuck felt that he was so controlled at BYU ("Reasons to give BYU a try.") I guess he doesn't like rules. Maybe he ought to move to a country that doesn't have rules. Everything that is good and right has rules. Does he think that we don't know how to think for ourselves because we choose not to allow alcohol or our body parts to do the thinking for us? I would rather use my brain to do my thinking, thank you. Anyway, enough said! Thanks for trying. I see risht through Pappas' stereotypes ' Mark Alice posted 11/21/07 they do is great—but they just don't and can't compare to the experience that you get on Greek Row. Or maybe the decline is due to a new generation of students. One thing is for sure—you are missing out on a life-changing experience. I have experienced it and have seen others that I love and care about become better people. Whether they are LDS church leaders, political leaders or leaders and members of other fields, there are so many who would encourage everyone to go greek. We extend the invitation to come see for yourself what Greek Row has to offer, because I know and will always say that it is the best way to live your college experience, build lifelong friendships and become a better person. Timmy Cannon is the annotator of the Sigma Chi fraternity. § Clearly, if you look at the stats as well as the U of U and their early season (devastating) injuries to key players, overall, Utah is a better team. Granted, the Y has a good balanced program down there (south), but they will not match up to Whittingham's combination of trick plays and the versatility of Brian Johnson. Sakoda will keep the game close, and the Utes will prevail once again by 6 points. Utah 29, Y 23. Looks like at about 3:45 p.m. yesterday, Utah didn't have another win, and the score was not 29-23 Utah. I can't really remember too clearly, but wasn't it like 17-10 BYU? Yeah, I think it was. And Mack sure didn't live up to his hype. 56 yards? Unga showed him who is the better running back. Vengeance posted 11/25/07 @ 8:39 AM MST Looks like Utah comes up short again. It was nice to see this article wasn't full of a bunch of whining and complaining about the officials, like fans have posted in response to other articles. Good game, Utah. I thought BYU was done for, but they surprised everyone. Moron with a vengeance posted 11/25/07 @ 2:00 PM MST Idiot. You don't think Mack's 56 yards had anything to do with BYU's superior run defense? Oh and by the way, my sister could get 100 yards rushing behind that BYU offensive line. Those guys are huge! That game proved nothing about who was the better running back. Check out The Daily Utah Chronicle online. Peter Munk Junior, History 'A i |
