Show newspapers large and small hard hit by new measure new postal rates on second class mall mail matter went into effect this week throughout the united states the new schedule means an advance in cost of the reporter to sub subscribe scrib ers and large papers of course are hit much harder for several months publishers of newspapers mag magazines and other periodicals have waged a strenuous fight to havethe new law repealed before it went into effect many of them alleging that opera tion of the advanced schedule of rates would put them out of business As a matter of fact a number of bubli have already suspended div ing as the reason the assertion that they would be unable to operate when the higher postal rates became effective the purpose of the legislation re quiring the increase was said to be to raise revenue tor for war purposes it is expected that several million dol lars will be secured by this means under the former regulations sec see ond class matter was carried within the united states at a flat rate of one cent a pound regardless of the dis tance from the place of publication tion under the new regulations there Is an advance of one fourth of a cent a pound on reading matter regard less of distance and a graduated in crease of much greater proportions on advertising material depending upon the distance carried for the operation of the new schedule on ad ver matter the country is di dl vided into zones these zones being the same as those used by the par eels post system |
