His recruiting appears to be improving, and while he has to endure a brutal schedule every season, the school will be more patient with him since it has the basketball team to take the spotlight. Kyle Whittingham Record as head coach at Utah: 3-1 (first-year) Ute fans have been jumping on Whittingham due to the overtime loss to TCU and the two close calls against Arizona and Air Torce. But remember. Urban had two full years of head coaching experience before he arrived in Salt Lake City. Kyle has none. He's learning as he's going, and if he can take his lumps and still be 3-1, there is little to complain about. Who has the advantage? QUARTERBACKS Brian Johnson keeps getting better and better. Except for an interception that wasn't really his fault, he was darn near perfect against Air Force, showing off on the ground and through the air. Now we will see how he does in his first road game since the TCU debacle. Matt Baker has a bunch of yards, but he has only completed 47 percent of his passes and has five interceptions. But he might be turning the corner, as he had an impressive second half in the Tar Heels' win over N.C. State last week, completing 12 of 14 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Edge: Utah RUNNING BACKS Since the Utes have been going more to the air, Quint on Ganther's yards have been decreasing. He is still a force when he gets rolling, but that might be difficult against a North Carolina run defense that allowed 13 yards on the ground against N.C. State. LSU transfer Barrington Edwards is another Tar Heel who had a big game against the Wolfpack, compiling a career-high 129 yards, including a 62-yard run on the second play of the ^nnie. True freshman Cooter Arnold, who has 85 yards on the year, backs up Edwards. Edge: Even X RECEIVERS Travis LaTendresse proved unstoppable against the diminutive Falcon secondary, but will be challenged by the Heels. We will see if last week was a step toward being the go-to guy or if LaTendresse will melt back into the shadows. Brian Hernandez showed off some good skills and looks as if he will develop into a contributor. Although he is only 5 feet 8 inches tall, Jarwarski Pollock is the big threat for the Heels. He is only eight receptions shy of breaking Na Brown's school record, a mark that could be broken on Saturday if the Ute pass defense doesn't shape up. Edge: Utah X OFFENSIVE LINE The Ute line has been solid, giving Johnson enough time to find receivers and allowing for a 4.1-yard team rushing average. As long as they can stay healthy, this won't be an area of concern all season. The Heels have some big-time talent along their front five, including left tackle Brian Chacos, right guard Kyle Ralph and left guard Charlston Gray, who was a first team freshman Ail-American in 2004. While they all have their individual merit, the unit as a whole has not really gelled. The team is next to last in the ACC in run offense with a mere 87.3 yards per game and a 2.6-yards-percarry average. They have also allowed Baker to be sacked 11 times, something that needs to be remedied, considering they have very little quarterback depth. Edge: Utah DEFENSIVE LINE All the hullabaloo about the Utes being unable to stop the option came to an end against Air Force, when the U D-Iine forced the Falcons into a rare passing gameplan. The experiment with Steve Fifita at end is working, and it could change the tide of Saturday's game if the line can put pressure on the erratic Baker. For the season, the Carolina line has been decent at stopping the run, but they truly rose to the occasion against N.C. State, giving up a baker's dozen yards on the ground. The pass rush has been up and down, with end Tommy Davis leading the squad with two sacks. Edge: Even X LINEBACKERS X At long last, a big welcome goes out to Kyle Brady. The former Utah Mr. Football is finally starting at stud linebacker, and it looks as though he won't be giving it up for a while. The Utes look as if they have finally found a good starting group in Brady, Joe Jiannoni and Spencer Toone. The depth took a bit of a hit with the suspension of Malakai Mokofisi, but at least the unit is heading in the right diiection. The Heels have a good, experienced group and are led by Tommy Richardson, who has a team-leading 26 tackles, 3.5 of which have been for a loss. Edge: Even X SECONDARY Eric Weddle made a few mistakes against Air Force, but what sets him apart from other safeties is that he came right back and atoned for his errors, coming up with a big interception and a fumble recovery. Steve Tate looked good in his first start and merits more time. Ryan Smith has been roasted enough for his off game against the Falcons and doesn't deserve excessive consternation until he starts having more bad outings. The North Carolina secondary is definitely an area of big concern. It is dead last in the ACC in pass defense, ceding 249 yards per game through the air. Cornerbacks Jacoby Watkins and Cedrick Holt are serviceable, but Brian Johnson should be able to pick this group apart. Edge: Utah X SPECIAL TEAMS It's been a weird fall for the Utah specials, Dan Beardall couldn't beat out anyone for two years, and now he's six for seven on field goals and has the poll position in the race for MWC kicker of the year (although Wyoming's Deric Yaussi will have some input in that). On the flip side, expected gamebreaker Justin Walker has not been on the field to return kicks; giving the job to Brent Casteel. Louie Sakoda's average isn't great, but most of his punts have been from near midfield and he has done a good job of getting the ball downed inside the 20. Tar Heel kicker Connor Barth has had an off year so far, but he's proven to be clutch, having nailed a 42-yard game winner against No. 3 Miami last season. Edge: Utah X COACHING There isn't a whole lot to say about Kyle Whittingham. He's winning, and even though some of the games are a little closer than they should be, at least he's learning how to be a head coach while still putting Ws on the board. John Bunting is once again on the hot seat, but it's hard to fault a guy who has to play one of the toughest schedules in the country year in, year out. Winning in the ACC is tough enough without factoring in nonconference tilts against Louisville, Wisconsin and Utah.
