That would leave r,6oo students currently enrolled with nowhere to turn. Of the 21 companies from which the U requested coverage, only three responded and GM Southwest was the only company willing to cover U students without a mandate requiring all to be insured. If the mandate is incorporated, SHAC members said tuition would not be affected and added insurance premiums are already covered by grants and student loans. Trinh said more students would come to the U plan under a mandate, thereby low- "If you buy house insurance, you shouldn't get mad when your house doesn't burn down," Tiffany Trinh said. ering premiums and extending benefits. She cited other universities that have pushed mandate requirements where premiums have dropped by 50 percent and students are in 98 percent compliance with the mandate. Some students, like Bryson Morgan, weren't satisfied with the answers in Friday's session. "This all seems like speculation and fuzzy answers," Morgan said. "I don't trust the insurance companies. It's SIGNS out of the money they pay to insurance companies, Trinh compared it to homeowner's insurance. "If you buy house insurance, you shouldn't get mad when your house doesn't burn down," she said. SHAC is now backing the idea of a mandate, however Trinh said they would stop pushing for it if the students don't want it. "We just want to present the real dangers of leaving it the way it is," Trinh said. sgehrke@ chronicle.utah.edu Located less than two miles from theiiiiivefsitv of Utah Campus. Let. Meyer Enterprise Designers has been hired to put together a number of larger signs—up to 20 feet high—that can be seen while driving, as well as more specific placards with more information for pedestrians, according to Eric Browning, Meyer's planner/architect for facilities planning. Meyer Enterprise will soon begin Phase I of fabricating and installing. Right now they're seeking out locations for the first 150 of the 318 total signs, however. Phase I is expected to be completed before Fall Semester 2005. This project will "immensely" improve the look and image around campus for students and facility, Browning said. Also, a major improvement like this will especially benefit those who have never been to campus and do not know their way around, he said. That's true, Perez said. "The signs around campus are greatly in need of improvement." Browning pointed out the old rusty sign on the comer of South Campus Drive and University Street. "You can hardly even tell it is a sign anymore," he said. Besides new signage on roads, each building on campus will have a sign including the complete building's name and acronym, as well as the U.S. Post Office's mailing address. Also, "we are implementing ways to update and improve portions of the signs without complete removal and replacement," Perez said. This will not only extend the life of the sign, but will also save the U money in the future, he said. "We have the funds for Phase I of the project, but we are not quite sure where the funds for Phase II [si million] and Phase III [3500,000] will come from," Perez said. "We will work to allocate those funds in review boards when the time comes." cogrogan@ chronicle.utah.edu gram and half did not.
