By MILES SHAW Section Editor Weber State University’s Stromberg Complex is the home of recreation for Wildcat students wanting to pump iron, shoot hoops, swing a tennis racket, jump in a pool or climb up a rock wall. Although the complex has had limited hours and activities because of the pandemic, it’s still open to students who want to stay active but away from the summer heat. “All cardio and weight training areas are available for use and are set up for social distancing,” Matthew Barker, Stromberg Complex facility manager, said. “We are currently not permitting the use of any of our indoor courts for drop-in activities.” The facility is home to Wildcat Arena, Swenson Gym and pool, tennis and racquetball THE SIGNPOST TEAM Matthew Barker Matthew Barker Matthew Barker MyWeberMedia.com| June 8, 2021 | 11 Lifeguards sit on the edge of Swenson Pool inside the Stromberg Complex at Weber State University. courts and a rock-climbing wall. “Equipment is being cleaned multiple times a day and face coverings are still required when not actively engaged in exercise,” Barker said. The climbing wall is currently being used for academic purposes only, but drop-in climbing is available in the Outdoor Adventure and Welcome Center. Swenson pool is available for lap swimming but must be reserved ahead of time. Almost any activity is available for Wildcat students looking to become or stay active in their free time. “The science is clear — students who engage in regular physical activity perform better in the classroom, and we have a wide range of activities for students to participate in,” Barker said. Physical education classes are also held in Weber State students can use weight lifting equipment in Swenson Gym. the complex and can be taken for one credit hour. Classes include tennis, racquetball and basketball among many others. “The Stromberg Complex is a huge space consisting of two major departments. The Stress Relief Center is located on the first floor in room 124, but is currently closed due to the pandemic. The SRC plans to open for fall semester in August and features massage chairs, inversion tables, a biofeedback machine and reclining chairs among other tools to help students relax. “I definitely believe that we have one of — if not the best — student gyms in the state,” Barker said.
