Show CITY I 1 L L HAVE TO PAY HIGHER ON WATER the zuma promises to be next sensation in tintic gintic gintic people let the stan dard get away from them that la Is they waited too long after the ore nas ft as encountered there and finally awakened to the fact that a mine hid been developed and outside in vectors had picked up all the stock that was to be had at a low figure the same thing Is liable to happen at the zuma which gives promise of becoming in the near future but this job of bring a small property into the productive stage is a slow onland many people be come come impatient at the zuma the ore is being fol lowed by a wine from the level the last week there has quite an improvement in the notwithstanding the fact that only a small amount of sinking has been done owing to unavoidable delays A small donkey engine will no doubt be installed on thia this in order that sinking can continue and it Is understood that the zuma officers are going to make son e changes in their surface equipment the com compressor is now operating the hoist and machine drills and the they propose to put in new electrical equipment for running the hoist and this will lighten the load on the corn com and give more air for the un der ground ope operations lations zuma s stock tock sold up to 19 cents yesterday and there appears to ill bo only a very limited amount of it to be had even at that price i late last week the city council held a special meeting for the pur pose of taking up the matter of 0 en a new contract with the E eureka ureka hill mining company from which corporation the city Is purchasing the water which Is being re tailed to the patrons of the water system the old contract under I 1 which the city received 2500 gallons lot of water mater for 1 expired some time ago and officers of the mining corn com pany have served motive that they cannot grant a renewal at the old rate for the reason that it Is a los ing proposition manager jackson v mcchrystal of the mining company was present at the special meeting of the council and he submitted fig ures which showed quite conclusive ly that the city cannot expect to get I 1 water at the rate which has prevail ed tor for some years the cost sheet shoot for the operation of the pumping plant which was submitted to the city had previously been placed be fore the public utilities commission and on the showing of the mining company the commission granted permission to raise the rate now be i ing charged eureka city while no action was taken by the 1 council it Is understood that the ma bority of the members are convinced that the price asked by the mining company 1 for 2000 gallons Is not an unreasonable one and it la Is quite probable that another contract will be signed up on that basis there is no question but what eu du reka a water system can be made to yield a handsome revenue but be fore this Is possible some radical changes must be made the cus torn tom of charging one man for the water be he used through the use of a meter motor and allowing another iother at who Is I 1 on a flat rate to not only use an un v limited quantity but to supply his 0 neighbors is not only wrong but un just the business of selling water Is like that of selling any other corn com godit A merchant would not be i fi A able to make both ends meet if halt of his customers paid tor for what they purchased and the other halt half paid a small sum each month and were per bitted to help themselves our water system it if properly managed will not only pay tor for op oration but it will also pay a good share of the other running expenses of the city 10 |
