Show Volume XXX Issue I The Ogden Valley News Page 13 October 15, 2022 Playing Music - An Incredible Superpower What’s one of the best and most fun ways to enhance your child’s academic success? Music lessons! A mountain of research reveals that music improves cognitive performance in school, where students engaging in musical activities achieve higher grades in science, math, and English exams. Neuroscientists are discovering that playing a musical instrument engages practically every area of the brain all at once – especially the visual, auditory, and motor cortices! Those who play instruments solve problems more creatively and effectively in both academic and social settings, ultimately resulting in a higher level of executive function. According to Tom Barnes with Music.Mic, “music improves cognitive and non-cognitive skills more than twice as much as sports, the- September Super Starter Skyhawks of the Month ater or dance. Kids who take music lessons are more conscientious, open, and ambitious.” And that’s just the beginning! Amy Ellis Nutt, with the Washington Post, posits that “music training not only helps children develop fine motor skills, but aids in emotional and behavioral maturation. At Imagine Music Huntsville, we feel incredibly fortunate to equip our students with super powers that help them reach their full potential in academics and beyond. Whether it’s learning a classical piece on the piano or violin, singing a favorite pop song with the proper technique, strumming a few laid-back ukulele chords, or jamming on the guitar and drums…we love creating musical superheroes of all ages! During this construction the Forest Service has closed Cemetery Point to all use and access, except visiting the Huntsville Cemetery. There is heavy equipment running along the road from the toll booth out to the cemetery during normal working hours. It is expected the construction will continue until the end of the year. The Forest Service understands the need for people to visit the gravesites of their loved ones and does not want to block that access. This causes a problem with blocking access to recreation on the beaches while allowing access to visit the cemetery. Coming Soon: The 2022 Chordette Christmas Concerts It’s that time of year here in Ogden Valley! The Chordette’s have already started rehearsals for their 2022 Christmas concerts. Mark your calendars for December 4th & 5th for this year’s annual Chordette Christmas Program. The Chordette’s is a women’s choir compromised of ladies of all ages who are from, or once lived in, Ogden Valley. This will be the Chordette’s 41st year performing and bringing Christmas cheer to the community! This year’s theme is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree!” The Chordette’s are changing things up by bringing a little more jazz into their program. Get ready for a swinging time but, of course, there will also be traditional carols and music to round things out. Because of the popularity and large attendance by the community at the Chordette concerts, the Chordette’s are adding a second performance this year on Sunday, December 4. More information to come on performance times as we draw closer to the month of December. Another big announcement this year is the retirement of our amazing accompanist, Joyce Montgomery. Joyce has been with the Chordettes since its inception in 1981. The Chordettes would like to thank her for the excellent musicianship, commitment, and devotion she has brought to every rehearsal and performance through the years. At almost 91 years of age, this year she will be able to enjoy the Chordette’s performances from the audience! We would like to welcome Chantelle Knudson as our new accompanist. We know she will also be a great asset to the group. If you are interested in joining the Chordette’s, please contact Kay Kilgore at 801458-7058. St. Joseph Catholic High School Test Scores are IN!
