Show Volume XXIX Issue XIII The Ogden Valley News Page 5 May 15, 2022 Sixth Annual “In Search of Ogden Hole” Community Lecture Slated With Ogden Valley’s bicentennial approaching, the celebration already underway continues with the 6th annual “In Search of Ogden Hole.” This FREE community lecture, slated for Thursday, May 19, promises to be more intriguing than ever as Ogden Valley’s Shoshone and fur trade past comes to life. This year’s event will examine Peter Skene Ogden’s own 1825 journal entries of his travels through Ogden Valley nearly two hundred years ago and his interactions with resident Shoshone. Did you know Peter Skene Ogden’s brigade included a past member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition? Did you know Peter Skene Ogden encountered Timpanogos Shoshone in Mountain Green on the Weber River who had been Christianized by Escalante and Dominguez? If you love Northern Utah history, take a deep dive and plan to attend! This event is co-hosted by Weber County Heritage Foundation. Presenters will feature unique perspectives. Presenters include Jay Buckley, BYU Associate Professor of History; Brad Parry, North West Band of the Shoshone Nation; and Mary Myer, Chief Executive, Timpanogos Shoshone Nation. When: Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. Where: Historic Valley Chapel, aka Hearthside, located at 5612 E. 2200 N. in Eden, Utah. Local Family Enjoy Building Cycle Karts Last year members of the Gompert family attended the cycle kart race in Huntsville. This year, they thought it would be fun to participate again. Tom Gompert built a pretty nice cart from scratch with his grandkids Jane and Ben and will be racing in the Huntsville event May 14. They say they’ll also host a second day of dirt racing in Tom’s pasture on May 15! It is believed that the Gompert clan will be the only local entrants in this year’s event. Shown left are Tom Gompert with his grandkids Jane and Ben Gompert. SLC’s Church History Museum Now Offers Monastery Mornings Mike O’ Brien The monks and the saints are together again! One of the many wonderful stories associated with the old Trappist monastery in Huntsville, Utah is the great friendship that developed between the monks and their Latter-day Saint neighbors. Although the abbey closed in 2017, the monks and saints are together again at the Church History Museum of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. Monastery Mornings author Mike O’Brien practiced law several years ago with Elder LeGrand R. Curtis Jr., who now is a Church General Authority, current Church historian and recorder, and executive director of the Church History Department. Mike and Elder Curtis have remained friends through the years. After Elder Curtis read Monastery Mornings, he offered to include the book in the Church History Museum’s gift shop. Community Foundation of Ogden Valley (CFOV) is a volunteer organization made up of Ogden Valley residents who work together dedicating time, energy, and collaboration to keep our community amazing! They raise funds and awareness for many nonprofit groups throughout the valley by working hand-in-hand with representatives from the different nonprofit organizations (NPOs) serving Ogden Valley. The foundation also reaches out to community members interested in philanthropic opportunities within the community, explaining how to successfully leverage their donations to benefit charities supporting Huntsville, Eden, and Liberty. If you love Ogden Valley—whether you live here or play here—this is your opportunity to give here! The foundation is organizing and gearing up for this year’s Annual Giving Period—a fundraising effort from May 1 to September 30. During this five-month drive, designated valley NPO’s are encouraged to raise tax-deductible funds that CFOV will then match—up to $5,000. Last year they were able to match $5,000 of each NPO’s earnings, and give special $500 donations to the organizations unable to raise funds due to the continuing effects of the pandemic. Continuing this year, the CFOV board will allow nonprofit organizations to raise funds all year that qualify for matching funds. This allows the organizations that function mostly in the winter, such as school PTOs, winter sport activity organizations, etc. to reach out to their supporters during their most relevant time. In 2021, CFOV gathered the community in June for a much-needed Music on the Patio event at Wolf Creek Resort. They also celebrated with Abe Lincoln and a float in Huntsville’s 4th of July parade. The foundation sponsored blood drives and community clean-ups and essay contests. Santa lent a helping hand by visiting several families at Christmas time and donated all of the proceeds to CFOV. In 2022, the CFOV board plans to continue these old and new traditions, and to add a Fall Festival at Sunnyfield Farm in September. - Window Cleaning - Solar Panel Cleaning - Screen Repair - Gutter Cleaning - Holiday Lighting 801-458-9114 Contact us today for a free estimate. Watch for ways to participate in this fun Summer Closeout event! Community Foundation of Ogden Valley relies on different types of giving to be able to support the 16 nonprofit organizations they sponsor. There are several business sponsors in the Valley who donate money that is traditionally used for supporting the events and prizes that CFOV uses to develop and encourage philanthropy. A large share of donations come from annual Match Donors who donate funds directly to CFOV to be used to disperse to the 16 NPOs. There are several ways to donate to CFOV and the NPOs you’re interested in supporting. You may: • Donate directly to individual NPOs listed on our website (cfov.net). • Become a Match Donor, contributing to the Match Fund where monies benefit all NPOs. If interested in doing so, please contact Kim Best at 801-675-1723. • Become a sponsor for CFOV fundraising events so monies raised at events can benefit NPOs directly instead of covering event costs such as prizes, food, or advertising. If you would like to become a sponsor, please contact Jeannie Wendell at 801-745-2879. • Participate in upcoming events such as community gatherings, blood drives, and community clean-ups. • Volunteer to spread the word and share CFOV’s mission and efforts with neighbors and friends who LIVE HERE, PLAY HERE, GIVE HERE. CFOV’s website—cfov.net—provides descriptions of each nonprofit organization’s goals and visions. Contributions to the NPOs may be made on CFOV’s website or given directly to any CFOV-sponsored NPO. On CFOV’s website, you may also donate matching funds, or give a Memorial gift to CFOV in honor of David Goode. Donations by check can be mailed to CFOV at: CFOV PO BOX 684 EDEN UT 84310 For more information, please visit cfov.net or call Melissa Lewis, 801-430-2088.
