Show DESERET NEWS, State M yst Piondl luecytsooers For Lamce And By JACK MONSON Deseret News Staff Writer Ti has been a long time ace anyone was executed at Utah State Prison, fact, it has been so long t&t Prison Warden John W. tarner said he isnt certain ere fee hangman and five- - man firing squad are going to come from for two executions scheduled Feb. 5 at sunrise. Slated to die on that date are Walter B. Kelbach, 31, and Myron D. Lance, convicted murderers. Utah law allows the pair to choose death by hanging or shooting. Kelbach has chosen hang ing, Lance, shooting. The last time anyone was hanged at the prison was in 1958, when Barton K. Kirk-hawas executed. The last times the services of a firirg m squad were needed was March 30, 1960, when James W. Rodgers was executed. Now, says Turner, neither hangman nor firing squad are available. The county sheriff obtained such services in the past, but doesnt have a hangman or firing squad on hand either. It is entirely possible the prison will have to run an ad seeking such services, Turner said. A hangman for Lance may cost as high as $1,000. and the firing squad up to $500 for Kelbach, the warden said. Meanwhile, Lance and Kelbach, because of their hostile attitudes, are being kept separate from other prisoners in the maximum security facility, They are allowed outside their cells only under the w atchful of eyes prison guards. Kelbach at.d Lance were convicted of slaving James Sisemore and Fred W. Lillie Dec. 21, 19C6. during a holdup at a Salt Lake tavern. They were arrested at the mouth of Parleys Canyon, ending a Wednesday, December 31, 1969 ECelbsicSi reign of terror in which six persons were killed. DATE POSTPOriUD They were to have been executed July 7, 1967, folfive-da- y to appeals lowing courts. higher Warden Turner said these two men aren't the only ones whose future is uncertain. Another inmate, Darrell Devere Poulson, 31, is waiting lowing their trial and booking in prison on June 11, 1967. The execution date was cancelled and the new date was set fol- - a future execution dale, fie was convicted in the rapeslaying of Karen Ann Mech-lm11, American Fork, Sept, g. 17. 1961. IX MATE WAITING He was given a death date for Feb. 24, 1962 but further court action caused delays in the execution. At present, the awaits outcome judgment from U.S. Federal Judge i Wil- lis Ritter. Ritter ordered . a stay of execution, and nothing further has been done. Because PouLsons prison attitude is good, he is allowed to mingle with other inmates in the maximum security,, facility. He has eating, recreation and other privileges not awarded to Kelbach $od Lance. Warden Turner said - all three killers were transferred from death row in the medium security facility 4 in 1968. Then, on Nov. 15, Lance and Kelbach, along, with seven other maximum security inmates escaped. Both inmates and Delbert Lee Garrett, a parole violator, were apprehended in Burley, Idaho, about the time escapes were discovered by prison officials. je OPEN TONIGHT NEW YEAR'S EVE TIL 6:00 P.M.
