V e open ted our offensive patterns very well, but still need some work on defense before our first That was BYU coach Stan Watts summarizing the showing of his varsity squad in its 145-9win over the Cougar freshmen in a scrimmage at George Albert Smith Fieldhouse here Saturday night. V -- ? ij Mortrai Toronto Loc Bv BILL EWER News Sports Writer Parsons are off and running into a brand new basketball season, and although the picture isn't as rosy as head coach Tom Steinke would like, there is reason to be optimistic. Steinke, like any coach would be, is understandably downhearted over the loss of seven first liners from last years championship team. The Parsons last year boasted a 22-- record, a bona in Ken Hall, fide a conference divisional chamand went to the pionship, NAIA regional finals with a per game average. Now how can a coach be happy about losing a team like that? Gone is Hall, the Parsons e scoring leader (33.5 ppg), center Rusty Davidson and forwards Joe Winrow, Butch Clark and Bob Shafer. Gone also are a couple of Parson stars who were supposed to return and didn't 5 103-poi- nt all-tim- Steinkes problems really this fall when two or three promising recruits all failed to show up on campus grew m September. Eut coach Steinke isnt one to waste time over spilt milk. Instead he has been hard at work and come up with a team he thinks wll be real as the season competitive moves has along. Steinke never had a losing season at Westminster he doesn't plan on having one this year. Back from last year's squad is senior guard Oiuck Tebbs, the only returning regular who has had considerable experience. Other returnees are Landon Lyons, a juruor Steve Ruff forward, and who saw action in 13 games last year as a center but will move to a forward spot this year. Top newcomers are forward transfer John Kirkham, a from Colorado State University, and Curley Wells, a guard from Brooklyn, N.Y. Kirkham is a 1966 graduate from Orem High who led the 6-- 5 6-- 7 6-- 4 0 Ski Beginners CSU frosh team in scoring and counts big in Parson plans this year.
