Except that football heads up the sporting est for another six weeks bowls and playoffs. But there is a time when basketball coaches can have their hour. Some of them show their intrasquad talents this week and get under way with the starting gun Dec. 1. The big change in basketball this year is the in-t- ei loss of Lew Alcindor of UCLA. A California writer friend of mine said that this jear, for the first time in the past four seasons, writing about basketball would be fun. He admitted that Aleindors reign ruined the game for him. It was just a matter of by how much UCLA would win. Now the games he covers will be con- tests. The new interest around these parts is the Utes Wigwam. It's an attraction in itself. The Ute programmers say that with their basketbali, which may not be the best this year with Kenny Gardner on the limp list, there will also be entertainment of other sorts. For Show Purposes Only There is another concern that the Ute basket- ball bosses might have. The Wigwam turned out to be a pretty good place for staging an entertainment extravaganza. Bill Cosby proved this Friday w hen he proved how pleasant that place can be for such occasions. Which means that Utah basketbali had better hold its own or they will find better thing to wish upon the Wigwam. And those who remember the Denver situation should know it. Denver built a mammoth basketball barn and ice nnk in it. Soon ice skating was more of a an put draw than basketball and so, for the past two decades, Denvers basketball's been back in its old barn. Decision Was Already Made Some of as guessed it wrong when we thought the University of Utah would accept a bid to the Pasadena Bowl, one of the new bowl games in college football. The players nixed it in a Sunday vote. Last Thursday this reporter learned that the plavers would not go to the game if they were asked to vote on it. Some of the plajers had reported a definite no. I mentioned this to Ute athletic officials and they said no decision had been made. Rut it had. in the minds of some of the key plajers. And thej didnt change their minds. Possibly, it was some wishful thinking on the part of the head people that the plavcis would change their minds. As it turned out the Utes could have taken a vote a week ago and let Pasadena programmers get on with their game. When you are going to raise that much money every week counts. The game now is only 12 days away. n ?c $i n Look To Phoenix It seems now that diplomatic relations 9C 1 89 8 1 . be- tween the Western Athletic Conference and the Sun Bowl have been severed. This should give the WAC the chance to move now to negotiate with the Phoenix Fiesta Bowl which will be applied for this jear and possibly accepted b' the NCAA for a next Years start. The W AC should commit its champion to this one and then build it into a right proper affair. And a pajing one! A better howl game than that might come our wav only once in 10 jears. It wouldnt pav to wat for it! If Arizona State loes or is tied Saturday by Arizona in their game at Tempe, Utah wins the WAC title. A victory by Arizona State gives the Sun Devils the championship and wipes out Utah's hope The Utes voted not to attend the Pasadena Bowl and be the opponent for The Diego State. made the decision highly-toute- players Sunday Chris Farasopoulos halts Harden's morning Which ends the season for four WAC teams save the two Arizona teams, Utep which hosts Xavier Thursday and Colorado State which goes to New Mexico State Sat- urday. It was a fitting climax to successful seasons for Utah and and Brigham Young. It is better than Cither expected. The fact that the Cougars played the Utes to standoff is a the compliment to the Cats. The fact that Utah survived the contest at Provo is honor to the Redmen for this was a reputable BYU football force. 8-- 2 6-- e Looking back to what the 35,790 people at Provo saw Saturday, BYU nad the best defense and Utah the best offense (and some will argue that point). was Utahs offense which beat BYU s offense. And take nothing from Smith, hes top man m that Utah backfield. It was another game, like the Oregon State affair, where you can credit Clmt Harden for the winning generalship. Rav Groth couldnt put the Utes into orbit. As usual he staited cautiously and overshot his early targets. He hit only two out of 10 for nine yards in the air. He made two runs of significance in the first hall 12 and 15 yards and the latter came when BYU tacklers let him get out of the trap. He threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter but his backfield motion was illegal. In contrast Harden made his games n PING PONG TABLES tables 30"x50"j2r quet uw table. Folds for easy stor i se.
