Show Hero Vs. Villain-Teach- ers Thrilled hisses and cheers were perfectly in order at the Boos, UEA convention. Thursday night as teachers forgot the problems of the classroom to thrill to the age-olperils of d Kellie, a poor orphan girl. Toe occasion was a melodrama, Only An Orphan Girl, presented by the UEA classroom department . of teachers in the Salt Palace Little Theater. Tone for the melodrama ala UEA was-se- t by Glen L. Slight, director of the produc- ; tion who did double duty as the hero, when he urged" the audience to ease off your shoes, wiggle your toes and get perfectly comfortable." The audience was treated to all the elements of a traditional melodrama: a poorhouse orphan who is really an heirfarm lad; ess; a clean-cu- t an oily villain who schemes to get the girls money; a sultry villainess who sets her cap for the hero; and the traditional mortgage which is about to leave the poor, but honest, family homeless. The stellar cast played their roles convincingly, and the audience helped the characters with frequent coaching. In fact, they went beyond the traditional boos and cheers to call out such advice as, Give him a judo chop and Stop it, you rattlesnake. Charles K. Whitlock turned in a top performance as the villain, and Kaihy Vane was sweetness as personified Nellie, whose fair form was matched by an even fairer spirit within. Slight, who was always greeted by the strains of did a Men, fine job as the humble, but triumphant hero, and Elizabeth Rice was beautifully convincing as the vamp. Others in the matchless cast were and George H. Thompson Marva Banks Lindsay, who t'.ie farm hapless played couple; Nadda Hollingshead, the rustic neighboring widow, and Barbara F. Moyer, the widow 's child.
