The role means the actor, who is only now nearing 40 years old, must make himself become a man :n face, voice and looks. He must transform himself from a nearing black-mane- man, d white-haire- . i e ster. It used to take three hours for the makeup job, but Ive cut this dcwn to almost half that time, Hal said in Salt Lake a couple of days ago. I think that is about the minimum time. Even then, I allow myself two hours because I like to get into the mood and figure out the program. When I created the character on television, it took five hours to do the makeup because a rubber face had to be made and several other operations were necessary that I dont use on the stage. ,. t. just into a oldwrinkled middle-ag- I Hal says he finds interest in with Twain the growing years, rather than lessening. Hal says some of Twains observations about Congress bring the same laugh today that they did when his show first started with a few impersonations of the great American humorist 18 years ago. By choosing certain speeches and stories, I amt projecting what I think. I believe my own views on Twain have changed over the years. When I compare the first Twain recording of 12 years ago with the latest, I can see where I have changed. But I believe I have always remained faithful to Twain. lf Early in my life as Twain, I acquired a rare Edison film of him and recordings of his voice. I talked with people who had known him personally, and I contacted his daughter and granddaughter, I believe I know him as welt as any living being.
