For the past year he has been a student at Brigham Young University where he received one of two Deans Scholarships which are available to Indians. The new missionary is a member of the Magnolia Branch, North Carolina of the Central Atlantic States Mission. His branch president is Orville R. Graham, a missionary from Eden, Utah. Mormon Scout PACIFICA, CALIF.: Scout Rescues Friend from River near tragedy was averted last week Pacifica Boy Scout Larry Brin was picked out of the swirling rapids of the Stanislas River by fellow Scout, Bill gin-go- Wilson. Pacifica Boy Scout Troop 261 had been spending a week at Camp Ed Barrer, located near Aery, Calif., in Calavares County. The 18 Scouts climbed over a mountain to the rocky banks of the Stanislas River. While administering first aid to a scratched Scout, Assistant Scoutmaster Jim Grissom looked up to see Tenderfoot Bringingood fall from, a rock into the swirling waters which carried him over a waterfall. . . . The eastern band of Cherokee Indians is a part of the original tribe which was relocated in the early 1800s. Many of the Cher-okeresisted the change of location which was forced upon them by the government and remained in the area which is now Cherokee, North Carolina. The reservation which is one of the most beautiful areas in North Carolina and is visited by thousands of tourists each year, who come to see a drama of the Cherokee Indian history which is presented each night in an open es air theater. The young people from the six wards enjoyed a variety of activities including original plays, and dances. A Gold and Green Ball was held as part of the conference. A Sunday testimony meeting was the highlight event at which Stake President Udine Faliabela spoke to the youth. Three film makers of the Brigham Young University Motion Picture Production Department are in Kobe, Japan, where they are making on location the oriental version of Mans Search for Happiness. It depicts the plan of eternal life and the attainment of happiness through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The staff members in Japan are W. O. Jones of Ann Arbor Ward, Dearborn Stake, left for Washington, D.C., recently where he will join the staff of the Council of Economic Advisers to the President. Bishop Jones is a native of Logan, Utah, where he received his BS degree in economics at Utah State University. He won his doctorate at Stanford University. Until his recent appointment he was professor of finance at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Mich. He has authored many articles and books on problems of finance. s l Laurie Tucker, active Church member and seminary graduate, represented Myrtle Point at Oregon Girls State 1969 at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. She was elected attorney general and had a long conference with the states attorney general, Lee Johnson. An active figure in school politics, Laurie was chosen for high scholastic standing, speaking ability, and qualities of character such as honesty, diligence, dependability and friendliness. She was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. She is organist for Junior Sunday School, music director for Primary and MIA, as well as a teacher for the Primary class. She has been active in Church and school dramatic and musical productions and as a junior counselor at LDS Girls Camp. She has earned her class award each year in MIA. Upon graduation from Myrtle Point High School, Laurie plans to major in political science at Brigham Young University.
