The International Peace Gardens at 8th West and 10th South offers visitors a glimpse of the flowers and gardens of many lands. Chinese section theres a pagoda, graceful the In bridges and plantings and a magnolia tree. A little mermaid looks out over a quiet pool surrounded by beautiful flowers in the Danish section. She is a copy of the statue in Copenhagen Harbor. Nearby is a replica of a Viking burial mound used in 2,000 B.C. in Denmark. A replica of Switzerlands most famous mountain, The Matterhorn, a miniature Alpine lake and Swiss chalet are attractions in the Swiss garden. There are stone lanterns, wooden bridges and paths to wander on in the Japanese section. 50-fo- At Pioneer Village, 2998 Connor St., visitors can live in the past for an hour or two, strolling the quiet street, stopping in at the old Crabtree e drug store, visiting the the cobbler's office, post shop, the blacksmith shop, the dentists office, the Paris millinery and dress shop. old-tim- There are more than 30 structures now in the village, which was started by Horace A. Sorensen in 1948 with a collection of old coaches and Pioneer furniture. It was deeded to the National Sons of Utah Pioneers in 1956. The Village also features a large gun collection, train exhibits, a native wildlife display, a Pony Express statue and museum and rides in covered wagons pulled by oxen. Theres a charge for adults and 25 cents for chil-nt dren. It took some visiting rel- atives to get me out there for the first time last year, and they were delighted with it. Theres more to the This Is the Place Monument than tho impressive statue, which most Salt Lakers take for granted and glimpse only aa they drive to Hogle Zoo or head up Emigration Canyon. Stop for a few minutes one of these days and really look at it again. And be sure to visit the Information Center where Lynn Fausetts mural of the Pioneers' trek from Nauvoo to the Salt Lake Valley stretches across three walls. Many visiturs from across the country have described it as one of the most beautiful murals they j have seen. When they unloaded they forgot a metal file cabinet containing valuable papers. I have called many times to, them in California. Finally someone promised it muld be located and shipped iu a few days.
