Nobody enjoys getting ugly. Aw, come on now Dottie, I said. You have beautiful features. She snorted. Its not the features Im worried nhout; its the covering. My face is getting so many lines and ... wrinkles THE CAUSE I started in by mentioning that wrinkling and sagging of the skin results from a combination of factors, including natural aging. As people grow older, I explained, the skin reaction of philosopher Bertrand Russell when some simpleton encouraged him to have a face lift. He pointed ont that hed spent 90 years acquiring his wrinkles, and proudly stated that they were a mark of great character. Doctor, speaking of face lifts . . . why couldnt I have one? Dottie asked. Well, we can always refer you to a plastic surgeon if youre really serious about it. She watched me eagerly. How do they give a face lift, exactly? SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH PHONE USE NEWS ACTION ADS I 4 4 Fashion Goes To All Lengths By EUGENIA SHEPPARD Whenever two or three women have their PARIS heads together in Paris these days, its a safe bet that they are discussing the length of skirts. What are you going to do? they ask each other, but they are more pleased than annoyed. The big question is not whether they will wear some of the longer skirts, but whether they will try them midcalf or almost down to the ankles. In the old days of the big Dior drop, life was much simpler. There was just one way to look and one length for skirts. , , Kl n't v uM NO EDICT Nowadays no one single designer is powerful enough to issue an edict like that. Almost all the length changes have been tentative and offered with plenty of alternatives. Its perfectly possible for a stubborn woman to go on livskirts, but its doubtful if she will ing her life in above-kne- e really want to when she sees the new clothes. The way most women Ive talked to see fall fashion is in a variety of lengths. There are times when nothing but a short skirt feels right, and others when it will feel marvelous to cover up again. Most of the daytime dresses will stay short. Not that Paris designers didnt bring out plenty of long suits and tweedy dresses, but most of them managed to look pretty dreary. Im sure some of the raving beauties and chic fashion models will wear them, but they certainly wont give a lift to the office or the poor working girl The two new basics every woman ought to invest in to look with it this fall are a long topcoat and a longer cocktail dress. Thats what the ladies shopping the Paris collections are ordering from their favorite designer, but both ' types are all over America, too. The pavement-lengt- h topcoat was a favorite with the e girls last winter. It was a sellout at stores like Bloomingdales with the young crowd. Adolfo made it to order for all his customers, including Gloria Vanderbilt, who wore it in both black and red. M tA.f v i ; h. -- 3 high-styl- LONG TOPCOATS This fall the long topcoat will no longer look even slightly startling. It will be everybodys fashion. American fashion collections were full of coats that reached the ankles or grazed the pavement, and reproductions of some of the long Paris coats will be corning along, too. Any woman who passes up this new fashion is passing up a wonderful bet for cold weather comfort as well as style. The new, longer cocktail dress is already a favorite here, with both the trendsetters and the conservatives. Probably the fashions in Paris have been the informal party dresses at Givenchy that stop anywhere from midcalf to just above the ankles. The exact length is hardly ever set by inches as it used to be, but depends on the length of legs or the individual mood. I can hardly watt to wear it to the theater this winter, said the lady who had just ordered Givenchys black organdie, with the little ruffle about three inches above her ankles. I'm so sick of staring at my knees and draping my coat or even a program over them. 0 t. most-ordere- d ANOTHER STYLE Besides the black organdie, another Ford in the Givenchy collection is the silver lame. The low flare i3 midcalf-lengtbut, as I say, exact inches dont matter as long as the look is definitely longer. A few Paris houses tried dropping skirts to just below the knees. It didnt come off. Wear your skirts as short as you like, or down to midcalf and longer. In between is a dreary compromise that looks like no courage or last years clothes. It ought to be an exciting winter. Ill be heartbroken if publisher Bennett Cerf doesnt denounce the drop in skirts, if husbands dont forbid their coats, if wives to drag around the streets in pavement-lengtthere arent a few indignation meetings and some customers who swear they wouldn't be caught dead without their thighs in full view. Fashion has been all too quiet lately, and a little excitement will give it more heart.
