Show 2C DESERET NEWS, Friday, August 8, 1969 Get on What We Have Here Is Failure... ; By PAT DAVIS Copley News Service J Realizing the urgent need relationfor better parent-chilships, in 1961 he designed this course based on his experience in private practice working with troubled families. d Why do parents with the jbest intentions fail to communicate with their children? Where is the bridge between love and communications? Why are so many teenagers feeling this growing generation gap? Dr. Thomas Gordon, Pasa- dena, Calif., clinical psychologist, feels it is because par- ents are blamed but not trained. His answer to this jiilemma is a workshop for parents called "Parent Effectiveness Training. Since then the program has mushroomed throughout California and Oregon and soon will encompass the entire country. Last year 4,000 anxious parents took the course. At least 6,000 will be enrolled during 1969 in classes in 60 different communities taught by 150 instructors. Dr. Gordon says there are three methods of handling a family conflict Method I is when the parent wins and the child loses. Father always knows best in this situation. Method II is just the opposite. The parents play a submissive role and the child becomes a virtual dictator. Neither technique provides a answer. Parent effectiveness training instructs parents Jn method HI two basic skills. Primarily, a parent must be long-lastin- g an effective counselor. Almost every young person will cast his vote . for this. Teens require someone who can be an active listener to help them clarify problems of everyday life. The second skill is effective confrontation. Parents most let their own needs be known and tell it like it is. They, too, an persons with feelings. When told how their actions are affecting their parents, teens generally modify behavior unless parents use their power to force tte child to change. The class involves eight meetings of three hours each. In these 24 hours parents learn which of their habitual techniques are ineffective as well Boning Up On First Aid two-wa- the y home. Here is an example of the parent effectiveness training philosophy in operation. Judy wanted to 6pend a weekend at the beach unchaperoned with a girt friend. Her parents had objections end fears. Instead of the usual refusal or giving-in- , both sides agreed to find an acceptable solution. Judy suggested that the parents enjoy a weekend of golf an idea near the beach which was acceptable to the parents. All four stayed at the 6ame motel. Everyone won, nobody lost. From his six years of experience in training thousands of parents, Dr. Gordon is cone methvinced that the od can be used to resolve all conflicts in the parent-chil- d candy quality!. no-los- relationship.
