For her, the days endless. Too elderly to get out and too around; feeble and infirm to take up new hobbies and make new contacts, lone-l- i n e s s has come to be her constant companion What can be done to help her? Who is assuming the responsibility of making life a little bit happier for her and other aged people who find themselves in similar circum- stances? Those who are working with Salt Lake's Friendly Visitor Program are doing their best. They are spending a few hours each week making the lives of Salt Lakes senior citizens much more pleasant and much less empty. THE PROGRAM Visitor The Program is sponsored by the Metropolitan Services for the Aging. It began, originally, with an idea of the director of the services, Mrs. Lucille Hutchings. Mrs. Hutchings, a personable and outgoing woman w ho has a great deal of respect for the worth of our older citizens, explains her idea this Friendly .Helen Anderson, left, who is confined to a nursing home, is delighted when Gwen Gushee and Heidi Sneddon bring her flowers. The girls are with Friendly Visitors Program here in Salt Lake, and they are finding volunteer work to be very rewarding. way: I could see that many of our older people were simply starved for human companionship. Some are housewives looking for a worthwhile interest outside the four walls of home. Some are men and women who have demanding careers, but still want to help others. Some are folks who could be called elderly themselves, but are defying Old Father Time by keeping busy and active. All these volunteers seem to have one thing in common.
