He passed away in Mothers The family settled in the small Mormon community of Powerene, near Benson. I worked hard and we accumulated enough so I thought I could go oo remy first mission. In October 1916 I ceived my call to the Southern States. I was leaving my wife and four children. It seemed that every obstacle was being put into my path to discourage me from going. I had a choice mare I was going to leave for Mother to use to drive the buggy. The mare slipped, fell and died. I bought 100 chides figuring on the family having fryers, pullets and eggs to eat A flock of crows swooped down on them and in a short time had killed all but one. I had a nice milk heifer "that would make a milk cow. She got bloated and I lost a yearling calf. Whenever I had a setback, it make us more determined. Satan wasnt going to discourage my wife nor me. would I got to Salt Lake City by train, and while there I met a friend from Mexico, Omar Bundy, now of St George, who had been called to the isame mission. We had tickets to Chattanooga, Tenn. We were among 35 called to that mission. requested to change their mission assignments to the Spanish American. Elder Bundy consented, but I held off. I had been raised in Mexico and we had been mistreated and driven out and I didnt want any more to do with them. A small voice kept urging me, You go to the Mexican Mission and you will be blessed, so I agreed. While in Del Norte in Colorado, Elder Fenn was a victim of a mob. He and Elder Bundy had split up, trading door to door. I had the impression to get out of there, but before I could get to Elder Bundy, a mob had grown. The mob leader shouted to me, You represent the church of the devil I replied, doctrine. and man-mad- e When you come before the judgment seat of Christ to be judged, you will know I represen i the true church of Christ. With that he hit me and then he hit me again, knocking me down, breaking my nose, and he began kicking me and hitting me. He saw a daw hammer on a nearby gate post, and went after it. Grabbing it he came at me. I thought, if he hits me with that, he will kill me. A still small voice came to me and said, Hell never hit you with that hammer. I prayed, God protect me. He tried to raise the hammer to deal the final blow, but his hand froze. He couldnt move and finally the hammer fell, he gathered himself together in panic and fled. rs Pres. Rey L. He promised us that, if you will heed the council of the mission president, youll see the power of the Lord manifested such as youve never seen in your life. This was literally fulfilled when they were about to close Azuel, a town about 180 miles away. The mission presidency asked us to go there, and perhaps we could keep it open. We .went and within two weeks we had baptized a young man 20 years old. Then we baptized a young lady, whose mother, 70 years of age, had been bedfast for a long time. Mother insisted the ill lady was worthy of a blessing. After I had blessed her, she got up and tossed away all of her medicine. That night we had to walk about blocks to put on a cottage meeting. We came home about 9 p.m. and Mother went to bed. I had been writing at the table in the bedroom. She said, Alvah, something terrible has happened to me. I cant see. She raised up and repeated it. She gave a little gasp and another, shorter, and when I felt her pulse, it had stopped. 1 said to myself I guess the Lord has taken Mother. What will the children think of her dying so far from home. They so adored her. I continued to hold her pulse, then it occurred to me that I had better get a doctor. I got a neighbor to find one, and the word spread in the neighborhood. Neighbors came in, and soon the doctor arrived, but he had forgotten his bag, so he sent someone to the corner drug store to fill a prescription. Meanwhile, Mothers pulse sumed and she began to recover. re- No one can imagine a doctor rushing to a call on an emergency without his bag. The Lords hand was in that too, because this wouldnt have been a miracle had the doctor been able to provide medication, Mr. Fenn maintained. After coming home there was much rejoicing, but the rocking chair was not meant for them. Mr. Fenn accepted a call to his 10th mission, in the Southern Arizona Stake. The worth of souls are great. There is much to do and we should he at our Fathers business, he said. We all can do it. Since the age of 65, when most men retire, he has served on six missions, held more than 2,000 cottage meetings, organized two branches, said 4,000 prayers, sang 3,500 hymns, conducted 1,700 cottage meetings in Spanish, bap tized more than 300 people, opened up missionary work in Sonora and Lower California, and s.en the power of the Lord manifested in hundreds of ways.
