When someone inquires about the quality of the weather, he nearly always asks about tie air temperature, but seldom does he ask aboi t the relative wmtvy'W'z AAWA 't' AA' ? humidity. x One of the reasons for this may be that a good many people have little or no knowledge of what relative humidiand they dont underty is stand how humidity can make them miseraole or uncomfortable. Hot temperatures such as these drain energy from you. have studies Laboratory proved that it takes 50 per cent more energy to perform physical tasks in 100 degree beat than in air thats only 75 degrees. Its no secret then that people work and play bet- ter in an air conditioned envi- ; ITS ronment. Most people purchase an electric room air conditioner primarily for its ability to ' kef p them cool. However, they soon realize that electric ajc conditioners keep their ; 'homes cleaner, requiring less dusting, washing of shades, woodwork, floors, furniture, carpets and drapes. "Most air conditioners have 'settings that permit stale, stnokey air to be exhausted tytjm file room and replaced bv fresh air which has bepn water vapor the air can hold varies with temperature. HOW DOES it vary? A lot. For example, a cubic yard of air at zero degrees Fahrenheit can hold only about half a thimbleful of water in vapor form. But if that cubic yard of air is heated to 72 degrees, abilthen its moisture-holdin- g ity is increased For those who are of a scientific bent, the reason why warm air can hold more moisture than cold air may seem To others, it may seem a mystery. The answer , cleaned, cooled and dehumidified. WATER VAPOR Put in the simplest terms, relative hunrdity is a means of measuring the amount of water vapor (that is, moisture in a gaseous form) that is in the air, taking into account the fact that the quality of Meg Lodefink shops for electric air conditioner to make this a cool summer. t. One of the ways in which heat is thrown off is evaporation. When the humidity is too high, the bodys rate of evaporation is slowed, or halted altogether. central system combats this kind of discomfort it lowers humidity as well as temperature. the great F to do with the fact that is made up of molecules air which have spaces between or water them. When air 1s the warmed, it expands spaces between the molecules grow larger and more water vapor can be contained. Its a law of nature that these spaces must be filled. Therefore, warm dry air will absorb humidity from any possible source lakes, rivers, vegetation, animals until it becomes moist. In most parts of the United States there are plentiful water sources, and thus the warm summer air becomes heavily moisture laden. Other organizations in the industry hae sought by various means to alleviate the need, but the scarcity of mechanics still remains one of the industry's major problems. It is for this reason that ARI, as spokesman for the industry sent out the urgent request that owners of homes seek to prevent or at least alleviate a recurrence of the problem brought on by the summertime calls on contractors to service units which might have been serviced during the down months. It was explained that contractors and service establishments sometimes have difficulty keeping their trained crews occupied during the stitute said, service organizations whose primary purpose is the maintenance of equipment, offer such contracts in many areas. Other steps are being taken by the industry to try to ease the summer service problem. It is seeking to provide more product training for service mechanics, to increase parts inventories at local and intercalls. ARI pointed out that many mediate levels so that there contractors and dealers offer, will not be delays n getting sum-mertl- service contracts covering preventive maintenance of the equipment they install similar to the service contracts offered at the time a television set is purchased.
