Show DESERET NEWS, Wednesday, May 21, 1969 WAC Officials Ponder Scholastics, Transfers By GEORGE . FERGUSON Sports Managing Editor PHOENIX, ARIZ. - There are two perennial problems in the Western Athletic Conferthe 1.5 academic enence trance rule and the junior college transfer rule. Both are so involved with Intangibles that the average including many person become entangled coaches In a web of confusion. Small wonder that WAC of ... cv v. her For example, say a school in the Big Eight has more lenient 1.6 prediction standards than a school in the Western AC. A certain lad could have a 2.0 grade point average in he school. Suppose high scored 16 on his ACT. Under the Big Eight table, that lad may achieve a 1.63 predicted GPA and be eligible for ath conference in the country. So the WAC Is contemplating the laborious and lengthy task of setting up structure for a new table. This involves sampling of incoming freshmen (not just athletes) at every college In the conference. The WAC hopes to determine whether the present table Is too high or too low 1568. Many in the WAC, though, seem to feel that the new table is comparatively higher than that of any other major compared to four WAC schools accept D grades for credit and lour do not. A two year junior college student must have 48 hours of acceptable transferable degree credits. After two semesters, a transfer must have 24 hours of acceptable credits and after three semesters he must have 36 hours of acceptable credits. Take the case of Utah, who dees not accept D's for credit hours against. Wyoming, who other major Crux of the junior college transfer problem is fact that does. At Utah, a lad may come up with 35 credit hours because Ds are not accepted. At Wyoming, he could come up with 38 because Ds are accepted. Point Is, of course, that those four schools which do accept D's have a recruiting advantage over the four which do not. The WAC problem is to achieve parity among all members. Commissioner Wiles Hallock would like a realistic ex change of ideas and information on campus disruptions. To date, these disruptions have occurred at New Mexico, Texas El Paso. Colorado State and Arizona State. We want to put this problem on the table, recognize It and discuss it intelligently, Hallock said. "Like any other problem which might arise in the future, It is to our advantage to have an insight and background on situations at See WAC on Page C-fl filler Hack .fr. gXQv letic aid. Under the WAC table, he may have a 1.55 predicted GPA and be ineligible for aid. The NCAA decreed that tables which govern the predicted 1.6 rule must be reviewed once every three years. The WAC table was brought up to date in October, independent predicts a 1.6 from a table which is more lenient in one way or anot- giapple with these intangibles constantly as they are doing this year at Phoenix where Arizona State is bust foi the spring sports roundup. The 1.6 entrance rule is so touchy because it is a predicted figure derived from a table. So, the important part of the 1.6 rule is not that figure per se, but the table from which that figure is predicted.
