Bennett will be among national and state dignitaries who will launch the Maj John Wesley Powell Centennial celebration Saturday in Green River, Wyo. Kit' ArtSK; Events will include reenactment of the first launch 100 years ago when Powell and nine men set off in four boats for tne first voyage down 'lie Green and Coloiado rivers. It will also include nf v: V . -- dedica- A. tion of Expedition Inland, the starting place of both the 1809 , and 1871 expeditions, as a National Historic Landmark, and unveiling of the design for a Powell Commemorative stamp. UTAH OBSERVANCE ""'N celebration g (Hi tswffi The Green River festivities will officially kick off a summer-lon- of Powells history-makinvoyage. Utahs main celebration will June 26 at Vernal, the lOOtb anniversary of the date when Powells party emerged at Split Mountain. Four replica boats bearing members of the Sierra Club g 'r B9XS 6RLS or EACH Of 20 "2L- - will be used in the launching reenactment at 1 p.m. at Green River and will be used in ceremonies all along the Green and Colorado rivers during the summer. Wyoming Gov. Stan Hathaway will welcome dignitaries including Sens. Gale McGee and Cliff both Hansen, Hollis M. Dole, U.S. Interior secretary; Dr. W. T. Pecora, U.S. Geological Survey director; and R. L. Utley, chief historian, National Park Service. PARADE SET i events morning will include a downtown parade featuring vehicles and the four boats to be used in the reenactment, and the unveiling of the commemorative stamp at the Green River post office. Ceremonies at Expedition Island will include dedication of a granite marker by Hathaway, dedication of the Island as a National Historic Landmark and launching of the four replica boats. Green River Jaycees will conduct a public barbecue during and after the island Saturday ceremonies. 3 . In conjunction with the Powell celebration, the Utah Travel Council and Wyoming Travel Commission will hold a combined meeting Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Rock and Green Springs River.
