She will represent the state at the national convention in Dallas Tex. in June. CALIF. SACRAMENTO, Two sets of brothers from the Marconi Ward American River Stake here are making a sensation with their barbershop quartet named the Morraonaires. Tbe group was starred at the ward MIA quartet festival. Lorraine Gibb, a high school coed and MIA organist talked the boys into forming the quartet and they have been singing as a group since. The boys, David and Michael Thomas and Richard and Ray CVandal have competed and won on a ward stake and regional level They also were invited to participate in the local Barbershop Harmony Show at Memorial Auditorium hare. Because of their name Mormonaires they are not only bringing credit to themselves but also to the Church Alt four boys are honor students in high school They are active in church work ani all hold leadership positions among the youth in their wards. The group plan to join in competition at June Conference in Salt Lake City. NORFOLK, VA. An early morning seminary student, Diane Farnsworth, was recently named Norfolks Junior Miss. In winning the title, she placed first in two categories creative and performing arts and poise and appearance. She was also named Miss Personality by tile other participants. She received a $500 scholarship and the use of an 1909 automobile for one year. Diane is the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. William D. Farnsworth. Her father is commanding officer of the Naval Rework Facility at the Norfolk Naval Air Station. ' i ', Tipesmoke' Chinook helicopter hauls rigged Huey to Phu Pilots Job Warrant Officer Joel L Nicoll from Ramah N.M. is a young man with, a purpose and a will to five. Yet to fulfill that purpose, which, is recovering downed aircraft, he must risk his life. He is a pilot in the Pipesmoke unit, which has the mission of recovering and transporting immobilized aircraft in Vietnam. Nicoll Mr. Our job, primary explained, is to be ready to go into an area to rig and recover downed aircraft We are strictly a unit of volunteers rince our job is so Jar from being safe. We fly to downed birds ard hover nearby when rigging crews prepare the craft for the pullout. Mr. Nicoll the only Mormon in his unit, explained that since the unit was organized the men have flown more than 2,500 missions. Huey helicopters carry rigging crews and equipment Chinook copters actually make the pickup. Within five minutes after the call for assistance is received, the rigging ship and crew is airborne. Often the men of the unit find themselves under heavy fire from the enemy but whether or not the area is hot with eutmy Ike, die recovery unit performs its mission. As the Chinook approaches the ground for the hookup, which takes seconds depending on terrain and combat conditions it creates a 100 mph downdraft which often sends rice straws flying in every direction. Carl John Johnson was called as patriarch and set apart by Elder Howard W. Hunter of the Council of the Twelve. Bishop Chester William Hill of the Ricks College 7th Ward, was called as second counselor in the Ricks College Stake, succeeding Pres. Grover. RICKS , WEEK ENDING MAY 17, 1969 Pres. Grover was bom in Archer, Idaho, Sept. 26, to John Orr and Elnorah Ann Homer Grover. He married Leona Dell Stoker of Junction, Utah, in Manti, Utah, Dec. 27, 1952. They have three daughters . Pres. Grover, an economics and marketing instructor at Ricks College, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University. His Church work has consisted of serving in the Southern States Mission and then in bishopric, stake high council and stake presidency assignments. Pres. Hammond is a native of ELnkf-outIdaho, and was bom Dec. 19, 19.33, a son of Floyd Milton and Ruby Hoge Hammond. His wife is the former Eounie Sellers of Rexburg whom he man' led in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 14, 1956, They are the parents of five children. Pres. Hammcnd received his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Ricks and Brigham Young University and has done graduate work at the University of Colorado. He is a professor of theology and political science at Ricks and last year was named outstanding professor of the year at that institution. 1929 , Pres. Powell has served in Church administrative posts most of his adult lite. He has been an elders quorum president counselor in a bishopric bishop and high councilor. He served a mission to New Zealand. He was bom in Coalville, Utah July 14 1929, to the late Edward and Artemesia Bleak PowelL He married Elizabeth Howard of Chester, Idaho, in the Idaho Falls Temple on Aug. 9, 1957, and they are the parents of three children. He has received degrees from the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. He tachc--, at Ricks College. Pres. Hill, chairman division of humanities at Ricks, attended Snow College, the University of Utah and BYU in Utah, and received a doctors degree in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He was bom in Fayette, Utah, Aug. 26, 1912 to the late James William Hill and Sarah Baker Hill of Fayette. His wife is the former Helen Hansen of Cen-tfield whom he married in the Manti Temple July 1, 1949. They have five daughters and three sons. er |
