However, unions are about to begin negotiations and new labor contracts could splinter any profit increases. Homebuilders are not happy with the increased price of material and have asked through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) that the President's Council of Economic Advisers, the Cabinet Committee on Price Stability situaand Congress itself study the lumber-pricin- g tion. The NAHB says the trend toward use of other Materials such as steel, aluminum and plastics would accelerate if lumber prices continue high. AtiRich 180 Atlas Corp AvcoCp 1.20 AvnetInc .40 Another cause for the sharp increase is the Increasing demand for lumber by the domestic construction industry. "It is big construction that has caused this demand more than the homebuilding industry," M. Greenspan said. Besides pine and fir lumber price rises there are signs that the price of cedar and redwood will follow suit. In fact, the price of some cedar products has already been hiked. The most expensive cedar shingles have risen in price about 10 per cent in the past year, but even more notable, inexpensive (at least they used to be) cedar shingles have almost doubled in price. Redwood is up about 45 per cent straight across the board. "Lumber has always been a commodity prod. uct and prices fluctuate with demand and supply," Mr. Greenspan explained. 1 4112 gm, 141 26Am Construction Needs Up I 1874 40 31 28 22 57 23 -- Press Internationti United By 1, 2 L, Pi- - fol- the previous session lowing an extended decline 72,45 4s 1874 9 ; 5 67ss l APhoto .03b A Smelt 3A Am Stand 1 A Sugar 1.60 AmT&T 2.40 crease of lumber prices said, in general, plywood and lumber is just about double in price over that of one year ago. It all started with the price of fir lutriber, now the price of pine has started moving rapidly about 50 per cent over that of a year upward ago. "The customer actually feels the price rise at once because the retailer assumes a lot of the price increase and all of a sudden boosts the price," he said. There have been severe, causes for the rapid Increase, Mr. Greenspan said. Originally Japan purchased over three billion board feet of timber coming mostly from Alaska and Canada which normally would come into the Mountain West market, leaving supplies short. r 4574 72 19 .1:1 LI1 - ' that carried most market indexes to their lowest lev- 44 126 els in months 39 58 and a 58,k 41i 62 24,4 24'1 news cli- 213 36, 3574 3614 74, more favoiable 96 36,4 35 35's 14. mate helped bolster the 28 91 18 28,,: 421 4 75 4 76,2111 list. , Ai 10834 108,1 NI 330 351 34 35,1114 Among the major con- 29 68 67,1 68,4 151 5774 56ss 574 7o, structive news items were 3214 339 3211 32 no 34 3612 36 record industrial output in VI 60 47 46,1 4614 December, reported by the 58's III 5874 58 225 33 3"1 324""4 ' Federal Reserve Board, 209 26S's 26,4 2612 388 54's 54 54,1 a Commerce Depart- and 1244 226 13 12's vsi Ment report that the na- 68 4,4 41 16 282 1641 15 141 280 8834 8434 M 24, tion's gross national prodVs 424's 65 43 42,1 new high in uct a reached 31 I 37 31 30,4 12 1001 5441 53 54 December for the second 38 month in a row. 27 Sy 14 5714 37 52 228 3712 36 37,41 Shortly before the final 397 6314 63 56 90 58 58 174 bell, on the UPI stock ma,- 123 5414 54 14 5434 ket indicator, there were 157 7341 73 Vs 734s 179 414 3974 40'4 926 advances and 406 de- 10 15 1544 1574 v4 .90 1.90 Art9NtGas 4611 4171 3l74 29 23 837- Ametek In I Ampex Cp Anacond 211 Armco Sit 3 Armour 1.60 Fred Greenspan commenting on the rapid ,, Cp Ch High 26 159 124 39 244 AlliedSt Allis Chaim Alcoa 1.80 3 Amerada Am Airl .80 A Brost 1.60 Am Can 220 AmCvan 114 AmElec 158 Am Export A Home 1.30 AmHmS '22 Double In Price p 29 1,40 Last Chg.I 4574 '4 Low I irWest An,e1Susiar AnstricarPhsto arreWrinnt Belo:Mete IA Stock Averages es c9 1969 15, 3:00 quotations Courtesy Goodbedy and Co. 141 La Last ,' ;'-'.e erately active trading.
