Utah UINTA MOUNTAINS (AP) — Capt Peter Boggs was Virginian who liked a harmless practical joke One of his jokes made a band of Utah Indians famous in 1892 Boggs supplied fuel to military posts in Utah and his trips often took him through Shoshone Indian territory in the Uinta Mountains One day he was riding along a lake in the mountains when he came upon about a dozen Indians who were having a shooting match ‘Their target was a partially submerged log about 100 yards out in the lake The Indians were betting a quarter each then taking three shots at the log Misses were noted by the splash in the water while hits buried in the log and made no splash SAW Hlfc OPPORTUNITY Boggs watched for awhile and then saw a chance to pull a pracHe tical joke on the Indians removed the leads from several cartridges in his belt and walked up to the shooters “Ho!” he said and they answered for most of the Shoshoni knew him “How about getting in the match?” asked Boggs in their language “But you are too good a shot for us” answered one brave “Suppose I bet half a dollar to yoqr quarter” suggested the captaiii eager to try his joke The Indians agreed and the match began Boggs loaded his rifle with three leadless cartridges and of course they made no splash He easily won the first round WON EASY $18 happy-go-luck- y Fifteen hundred dead chickens surround E verett Weisbrodt on his poultry farm at
