Season By Spencer Richards After considering information gathered at five regional meetings the Utah board of big game control has authorized issuing special permits for this fall for bagging 29700 deer 1680 elk and 35 antelope The deer permits number second largest ever to be authorized by the board since special hunts began in 1934 In 1940 the number authorized was 23735 of which 20726 were sold In 1942 the board okehed the taking of 34596 deer on permits 20000 of which were issued for the Fish lake unit alone The board this year has also upped sharply number of permits issued for the shooting of elk allowing 1680 for the various areas compared to only 955 last year One member of the board reports that in studying the deer kill that it IS revealed many of the hunts will be for either sex animals and that a part of the increase in kill can be attributed to the fact the state has a number of areas that are special problems It is also reported that a few of the Utah deer herds have become interstate problems This condition has been found in the LaSal mountain district where herds that summer on the Utah side are creating a winter range problem in Coloo rado along the Daggett boundary where deer in Colorado are wintersummering ing on poor range in Brown's park and Clay basin in Utah and in northwestern Utah mostly in western Box Elder county where deer that summer in Idaho and Nevada are sometimes burdensome to Utah winter range and to alfalfa and other hay crops belonging to ranchers The last mentioned area is one of the hot spots in the area One large land holder in the area at one of the regional meets through his attorney requested that some 2500 deer be removed However most of the ranchers in the area apparently are in favor of letting the herd alone and not killing antlerless animals provided the state protects their alfalfa corn lands and their haystacks Members of the Box Elder County Wildlife federation were also strongly opposed to any killing of does in the area according to testimony at the regional board meeting conducted in Ogden Relative to the increase in elk permits two additional areas Heap-toand Three Corners would be hunted this year The report from the board foln lows: "Also a careful census made on the Mt Nebb section reveals a much larger herd than was believed present and 800 of the permits were al- lotted for this area to bring the herd down to numbers agreed upon by interests concerned" The board has decreed the fee for hunting antelope will be $10 and $15 for elk the same as in 1949 Price of special deer permits will be $3 in all sections except those in areas converted into game preserves and where only a limited number of buck and female deer can be taken In these areas the The permit will be $150 They are Vernon reserve Salt Lake watershed Stansbury preserve and the Mt Ogden and Heaston areas The report continued that "growing responsibility" of the big game board is indicated by the fact this year it took action on 74 different '' hunting units "The board authorized hunts on 69 units and voted against hunts on five and was unanimous in 79 per cent of its decisions Tabulation indicates that in 18 per cent of the decisions there was a 1 vote but no particular pattern can be traced in the negative ballot" the report said Only some three per cent of the decisions were made at a 2 vote
