A bleeding peptic ulcer may be located either in the stomach or in the adjacent bowel — very rarely in both The high rate of development of cancer in ulcer confined purely to the stomach is such that the present consensus of informed opinion is that such cases bleeding or not should be operated on without delay An instrument has been devised which can be passed into the stomach through the mouth By this means an ulcer of the stomach may be viewed directly Unfortunately it can not always be determined by viewing the ulcer in this manner whether or not it is cancerous Ulcer of the duodenum — duodenal ulcer — is often included under the term "stomach ulcer" Actually of course it is not an ulcer of the stomach Duodenal ulcer very rarely is cancerous Thousands of persons have suffered from duodenal ulcer for years on end finally dying of some other disease When ulcer of the duodenum produces a scar which contracts the bowel — obstructing it to some degree— surgery is necessary for permanent relief depending of course upon the degree of the obstruction Bleeding or hemorrhage from a duodenal ulcer may occur when no obstruction is involved Bleeding may be slight —or it might be furious and terminate in death As a general rule hemorrhage irom duodenal ulcer is treated If the hemorrhage is persistent and uncontrollable surgical interference becomes necessary This interference imposes upon the victim a procedure but one not conducted under ideal circumstances as far as surgical treatment of the ulcer is concerned Inasmuch as most patients with hemorrhage survive without surgery the question of future management must be considered It being necessary to take a non-surgical- ly life-savi- Jusf Arrived!
